Omschrijving

Description

The coupled LOCK consists of two brick-built sluice chambers, of which the two outer lock gates are 14.30 m. and the intermediate lock gate 9.30 m. long.

The quays and the lock gates are covered by natural stone coping stones. The eastern sluice chamber is 36.70 m. long and 7.50 m. wide, the western chamber is broader on the south side and measures 41.40 x 14.50, so that two vessels can be locked side by side. The lock gates lie two steps above the level of the quays of the chambers. In the lock gate on the Leiden side, within the doors two shutter-beam slots have been provided to enable the lock to be closed with shutter beams. Outside the lock gates short braking structures have been constructed on both sides based on three fender piles. In the stone coping of the quays a series of small two- and three-armed bollards has been placed, a considerable row of large bollards is located in the paved part of the quay. The lock is equipped with oak pointed gates, of which two pairs face the Rijnland side and three pairs face the Delfland side. The first hang rather inconspicuously in the door casings under the two outer lock gates and are operated with boat hooks. The sluice gates facing Delfland are moved by a system of curved hinge straps or quadrants fitted on the inside with teeth (so-called racks) and half a dozen hoisting mechanisms connected to these, embedded in the lock gates. The associated six-sided iron gear cases with crank are located on the lock gates and form the bases of the cast-iron lamp standards. On the six gates wooden service bridges have been mounted by means of forged-iron brackets, which are flanked by a simple bar-iron railwork with wooden railings. The gates are provided with wooden slides (sluice shutters) for the inlet and outlet of water, which can be raised or lowered from the service bridges with the aid of cast-iron hoisting mechanisms (consisting of a hinge strap and a gear case). The cast-iron lamp standards are provided with profiled bases and the shaft, which tapers towards the top, is decorated with plant motifs in relief. On the base the designation of machinery factory Rouakkers and Sons from Helmond. The four-sided copper lanterns are crowned by a cast-iron profiled ornament.

Valuation

The lock works with associated lamp standards are of general importance because of the cultural-historical value as a representative and reasonably intact example of a nineteenth-century coupled lock with original operating mechanisms. The lock works are likewise of general importance because of the architectural-historical value due to the integrity in main form, material use and detailing. The lock works are of high importance from an urban planning perspective because of the very character-defining location as the main component of the sluice complex in the protected townscape of Leidschendam.
