Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The villa 'De Uilenhorst', built in 1904, is situated on slightly elevated terrain, for which a sunken lawn has been laid out. The villa was built by Wijngaarden & Co. from Weesp, a woodworking factory. Whether this company was also responsible for the design is unknown. Originally 'De Uilenhorst' was built as a summer house. In the large garden behind the house, now in considerable disrepair, remnants of a swimming pool and tennis court remain, though these are of secondary importance for national monument protection.
Description
A VILLA set at some distance from the road, comprising two storeys on a complex ground plan, roofed with a complex, projecting hipped roof covered with red glazed tiles. The facades consist of a first storey built of rendered brick and a second storey built of wood. All facade sides have an asymmetrical main composition with asymmetrical window arrangement. Toothed corner accents in fair-faced masonry have been applied to the render. At the level of the lower and upper wall plates, an unrendered band has been applied with the brick edges whitewashed. The second storey has vertical boarding (tongue and groove) from the upper wall plate of the windows in the first storey. An hourglass motif has been cut into the underside of each plank. Many windows are detailed with cut-outs in the stiles and transoms.
The front facade on the west side has a centrally placed gable with roof slope and a decorative boss at the top. A large window with glazing bars and fanlight has been placed in the first storey. To the right of this, the conservatory is positioned, into which a three-light window with fanlights is inserted on this side. To the left of the gable the facade wall steps back, in which a two-light window has been placed. A small veranda is situated in front of this.
In the second storey, a balcony on corbels with wooden railings has been set in the middle of the facade. A Dutch door provides access to the balcony. The name 'De Uilenhorst' is carved into the balcony fascia. The rear facade has an extension of two storeys on the right side of centre under a continuous roof slope. To the left of this is an undivided window with fanlights. Directly to the left of the aforementioned extension is a small toilet window. Above this toilet window is a leaded glass stair window depicting an owl. On the right corner of the east facade stands a wooden shed in poor condition with a half-hipped roof, of secondary importance for national monument protection.
In front of the right side facade is a large terrace, which extends partially to the west facade. On the left is a complex conservatory window and on the right is a Dutch door providing access to the living room. Above this is a second, but smaller balcony with wooden balustrade conforming to the aforementioned balustrade. A Dutch door provides access to this balcony. The terrace is provided with a stone balustrade and has a semi-circular projection on the right, where a double staircase placed at the corners leads down to the garden.
The left side facade is three bays wide. At the level of the centre bay, the facade steps back, in which the main entrance is placed. To the left of this are two windows with glazing bars and fanlights, whilst to the right is a window with glazing bar and fanlight. At the far left on the corner stands a wooden pillar supporting the roof overhang of the aforementioned veranda. Between the latter pillar and the facade corner is a wooden balustrade placed.
The interior of the villa is in original condition as regards the ground-floor layout. In the nineteen-thirties some adaptations were made regarding wall panelling, tilework with a tableau in the hall and staircase and several fireplace sections. The representation on the tableau concerns farmers working in the field with below it the motto: 'The ploughman awaits from the Lord's hand, much mild blessing upon the land'. The interior contains a number of noteworthy elements from the original building year. Virtually all doors have carving with Art Nouveau influences. The ceilings are of wood and consist of beams, between which diagonally placed tongue and groove boards are visible.
Valuation
Villa 'De Uilenhorst' is of architectural-historical value as an example of a construction method consisting of a stone substructure upon which a wooden construction is set, as well as because of the detailing in the woodcarving with Art Nouveau influences in both exterior and interior. Also of typological value as an example of a summer house and of ensemble value as part of the villa area Bosch en Duin.
