Inleiding
Op de hoek van de H. van Lijndenlaan en de Waterigeweg gelegen wigvormig bedrijfspand met woning, gebouwd als schakelstation met woning en toonzaal voor de Provinciale Utrechtse Electriciteits Maatschappij (PUEM). Het pand is in 1928 opgetrokken naar ontwerp van architect H.F. Mertens in Zakelijk Expressionisme. Het hoogste bouwvolume was in gebruik als machinehal. De tweede bouwlaag boven de hal met ronde vensters aan de Waterigeweg, fungeerde als dienstwoning, het gedeelte op de hoek als toonzaal, terwijl zich aan de achterzijde een werkplaats van één bouwlaag bevond. In 1949 werd de dienstwoning omgebouwd tot demonstratiekeuken, waarna in 1968 het schakelstation is verbouwd tot kantoor. In 1990 werd het gebouw verbouwd tot kantoor en showroom/winkelruimte, waarbij de belangrijkste karakteristieken behouden zijn gebleven. De aanbouw die bij de laatste verbouwing is toegevoegd valt buiten de bescherming. Voor de hoofdingang bevindt zich een cirkelvormig bloemperk, afgescheiden door een laag gebogen muurtje. De erfafscheiding aan de Van Lijndenlaan bestaat uit taxus. Onder de bescherming vallen de stenen gemetselde bloembakken, muurtjes en hekpilaren.
Omschrijving
Het op de hoek van de H. van Lijndenlaan en de Waterigeweg gelegen voormalig SCHAKELSTATION is op een wigvormige plattegrond opgetrokken en bestaat uit drie, rond een voormalige binnenplaats gegroepeerde hoofdbouwmassa's die zijn afgedekt met platte daken. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in kettingverband, waarin oorspronkelijk alleen stalen vensters met hardstenen onderdorpels waren gezet. Op sommige plaatsen zijn de stalen vensters vervangen door kunststof kozijnen die buiten de bescherming vallen.
In de ronding van de voorgevel op de hoek van de Waterigeweg en de Van Lijdenlaan bevindt zich de symmetrische ingangspartij bestaande uit een entree in een portaal met gemetselde omlopende muurvlakken. Ter weerszijden bevindt zich een etalage van staal en glas op schragen. Boven de etalages en de entree is een plat overstek geplaatst. In de bouwlaag boven de entree is een groot stalen venster met roedenverdeling gezet, dat meeloopt in de kromming van de voorgevel.
Het geveldeel evenwijdig aan de Waterigeweg bevat links naast de etalage de ingang van de voormalige dienstwoning. Hiernaast bevindt zich een risalerende schoorsteen met rechts een smal verticaal strokenvenster. Links van deze schoorsteen bevat de gevel -hoog in de eerste bouwlaag- acht ronde stalen vensters binnen een rondom lopende rollaag met een hardstenen afwateringssteen aan de onderzijde. De vensters zijn voorzien van een roedenverdeling, terwijl het middelste deel ervan als valraam is uitgevoerd. Boven deze ronde vensters bevinden zich in de gevel vensters gescheiden door muurdammen. Direkt boven deze vensterstrook bevindt zich een plat overstek, dat om de hoek in de achtergevel doorloopt. Het geveldeel evenwijdig aan de Van Lijndenlaan heeft naast de reeds genoemde etalage een venster. In de tweede bouwlaag bevinden zich vensters onder een plat overstek, dat om de hoek van de gevel doorloopt. Dit geveldeel wordt beëindigd door een risalerende schoorsteen.
De voormalige binnenplaats is dichtgezet en alleen de rechter toegang bevindt zich nog op de originele plek. Rechts ervan zijn vier horizontale strokenvensters aan te treffen van het derde bouwdeel, de voormalige werkplaats.
De bouwvolumes met meer bouwlagen bevatten rijen vensters met nieuwe kozijnen, die deels oorspronkelijk en deels tijdens de laatste verbouwing zijn aangebracht. De bouwsporen van andere vensterindelingen zijn nog zichtbaar. In de noordwestgevel bevindt zich thans een spaarveld op de plaats waar oorspronkelijk een groot roedenvenster zat. Tegen de achtergevel is de recente aanbouw geplaatst, die buiten de bescherming valt. Het interieur valt eveneens buiten de beschermig.
Waardering
Het voormalige schakelstation van de PUEM uit 1928 is van architectuurhistorisch belang als goed voorbeeld van een in zakelijk expressionistische stijl gebouwd bedrijfsgebouw, waarbij is ingespeeld op de straathoek. Hierdoor heeft het gebouw een hoge ensemblewaarde.Tevens is het gebouw van architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de plaats in het oeuvre van de architect H.F. A wedge-shaped commercial building with dwelling on the corner of the H. van Lijndenlaan and the Waterigeweg, built as a switching station with dwelling and showroom for the Provinciale Utrechtse Electriciteits Maatschappij (PUEM). Description
The former SWITCHING STATION located on the corner of the H. van Lijndenlaan and the Waterigeweg is built on a wedge-shaped floor plan and consists of three main building masses grouped around a former courtyard, which are covered with flat roofs. The facades are built in stretcher bond, in which originally only steel windows with sandstone sills were set. In some places the steel windows have been replaced by plastic frames which fall outside the protection.
In the curve of the front facade on the corner of the Waterigeweg and the Van Lijndenlaan is the symmetrical entrance section consisting of an entrance in a portal with mortared running wall surfaces. On either side is a showcase of steel and glass on brackets. Above the showcases and the entrance is a flat overhang placed. In the storey above the entrance is a large steel window with glazing bars set, which follows in the curve of the front facade.
The facade section parallel to the Waterigeweg contains on the left next to the showcase the entrance to the former service dwelling. Next to this is a projecting chimney with on the right a narrow vertical strip window. To the left of this chimney the facade contains -high in the first storey- eight round steel windows within a continuous surround with a sandstone drainage stone on the underside. Directly above this window strip is a flat overhang, which runs around the corner into the rear facade. The facade section parallel to the Van Lijndenlaan has next to the aforementioned showcase a window. In the second storey there are windows under a flat overhang, which runs around the corner of the facade. This facade section is terminated by a projecting chimney.
The former courtyard is closed in and only the right entrance is still in its original location. To the right of it are four horizontal strip windows of the third building section, the former workshop.
The building volumes with more storeys contain rows of windows with new frames, which are partly original and partly applied during the last renovation. The construction traces of other window layouts are still visible. In the northwest facade is now a spandrel panel in the place where originally a large glazed window was. Against the rear facade is the recent extension placed, which falls outside the protection. The interior also falls outside the protection.
Valuation
The former switching station of the PUEM from 1928 is of architectural-historical importance as a good example of a commercial building built in functionalist expressionist style, which responded to the street corner. This gives the building a high ensemble value. The building is also of architectural-historical value due to its place in the oeuvre of architect H.F. Mertens and due to the rarity of the building type.
