HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Empe. The garden and park layout of the country estate can be distinguished into three parts: the garden in landscape style in front of the house, the neo-formal garden behind the house and the park wood on the west side of the Voorsterweg. In 1930 the landscape architect H.A.C. Poortman adapted the original 19th-century landscape-style layout into a mixed style (NB no design of the Poortman layout has been preserved, but there is an aerial photograph from 1938). The three mentioned garden components are visually connected to each other by sight lines, which are now largely overgrown. The sight lines to the outside have also been largely blocked, such as the sight line from the house in a westerly direction towards the Tondensche Beek and in an easterly direction towards the church tower of Zutphen. The 19th-century landscape layout in front of the house was further embellished by Poortman while retaining the formal avenue element of several monumental oaks on the lawn in front of the house. Over the lawn towards the Voorsterweg runs a sight axis, which is bounded on the west side by a curved rhododendron group. The original straight moat to the northeast and to the south of the house has been enlarged into a winding water feature, which ends in a pond (northeast) with irregular bank lines. The park wood on the other side of the Voorsterweg has a landscape-style layout from the end of the 19th century, as shown by the Chromotopographic map from 1913 (surveyed in 1865). The rectangular wood parcel is enclosed on three sides by meadows and is designed with a curved path structure and a diverse tree population including various exotic species (American Oak, Plane Tree, Tulip Tree). The transparent character of the wood emphasises a strong visual cohesion with the surrounding landscape. An important element is the artist's studio in the northwest corner. In 1930 the layout was renewed by Poortman. From the edge of the park wood runs a sight line towards the house.
