Inleiding

Introduction

SUMMER HOUSE, designed in 1939 according to the principles of the New Building by architect G. Rietveld for the family of Dr. J.C. Brandt Corstius and executed by the Utrecht contractor Moolenbeek.

The dwelling is located in the dune area of Petten, with its rear side against the dune ridge and overlooks a broad, low open space within the dune region. To the left and to the right side villa development at some distance.

The summer house at Petten, which has undergone only minor changes on subordinate details, is a highly characteristic work by Rietveld. This also applies to the interior, where typical Rietveld solutions have been applied. The appearance of the dwelling is dominated by the large covered terrace on the southeast. In summer this terrace can be integrated with the living space by opening the many glass doors. At the same time the house is also excellent for winter use, because the glass wall on the west is screened by the master bedroom, while the glass wall also optically enlarges the living room, so that one does not need to feel confined in the fairly small room.

Description

The building, designed on the basis of a 1 metre module on an almost square ground plan (including the covered terrace), consists of one storey under flat roofs at different levels. Both the bicycle storage and the entrance on the north side are namely built to a lesser height, creating an alternating play in building volumes. In addition, through the large covered terrace on the southeast side, a good balance has been achieved between open and closed parts and light-shadow effect.

The summer house is built of brick, laid in half-bond masonry and painted black up to the window sills. Above this the masonry is painted white. Window frames and front door are executed in steel, the three square columns supporting the terrace roof are of wood.

The front facade (east) is bordered on the left side by the covered terrace and contains one window strip. On the right side is the storage shed, provided under the roof line with a horizontal window with one vertical glazing bar.

The right side facade (north) likewise contains at the top a strip of horizontal windows up to where the shower room projects slightly forward. Below this series of windows, under one continuous roof line, both the storage building is extended (likewise with a strip of three horizontal windows), and the slightly less projecting kitchen and entrance. The wall surface of the shower room is blind.

The wooden frame of the bicycle storage is no longer the original. This consisted of a double door with next to it a fixed section of vertical wooden parts. There are now three doors.

The left side facade (south) projects in over two-thirds of its length, thereby creating the covered terrace. The roof is now supported by a support beam and beam pieces between the roof plate and the columns, whereas originally the roof plate rested on the columns without consoles. During restoration work shortly after the Second World War the originally taut roof overhangs were provided with a wooden cladding and an additional gutter line.

The living space is separated from the terrace by a glass wall. On the west side one can enter the terrace from the master bedroom via the sliding doors. The south facade of this bedroom is blind.

The rear facade (west) has a pair of coupled windows for the corner bedroom and a window for lighting the middle bedroom.

The interior of the dwelling is entirely original and bears the typical characteristics of a work by Rietveld: utilizing the limited space as versatilely and optimally as possible. This is evident for example in the use of a sliding door between kitchen and room, the installation of fold-out cupboards above the beds and wooden fold-up tables above the washbasins, which can thus also be used as a table. The floors consist of wooden parts, originally painted dark grey. The kitchen floor however is concrete. Furthermore the colours are hard blue with regard to the interior doors and kitchen cupboards, and yellow with regard to the thresholds of the terrace doors and the window sill. In the bedrooms there are likewise yellow window sills and yellow fold-up tables, the cupboards are off-white.

Valuation

The summer house executed for the Brandt Corstius family according to the principles of the New Building is of general importance due to architectural and cultural historical and typological value because of the virtually intact and characteristic main form, the articulation (consistent application of 1-metre module), the use of materials and the detailing; as an example of a summer house designed by G. Rietveld in his so characteristic style. A summer house is rare in the oeuvre of Rietveld; this object occupies an important place within the oeuvre of Rietveld.

The building has situational value through its visually defining location in the dune area near Petten.
