PARKAANLEG, bestaande uit a. oprijlaan b. binnenplaats c. landschapspark d. voormalige moestuin e. siertuin f. weiland g. overig terrein

Description
Description
PARK LAYOUT, consisting of a. entrance drive b. courtyard c. landscape park d. former kitchen garden e. ornamental garden f. pasture g. other grounds
ad a.: the relatively short entrance drive (layout 18th century or older) begins at the entrance gate (see under 4) on the road and runs via a bend straight towards the gateway to the courtyard; on either side of the gravel surface is a broad grass verge, in which pyramids and cubes of box and yew (20th century early); there are still 8 old lime trees, 18th century, and an old horse chestnut near the gateway passage to the courtyard. Directly north of the drive runs parallel the unmade road to the farmyard; as visual separation, fine spruces were planted at the beginning of this century between entrance drive and farmyard road; these have meanwhile grown too large compared to the old limes, the original avenue planting. ad b.: the courtyard is enclosed by the castle (east side) and the U-shaped farmhouse (see component 3) and has a symmetrical layout. The surfacing consists of sandstone flagstones, a typically English element from the early 20th century; in the middle a well (see under 6) surrounded by eight concentric box circles; these circles and the other low box hedges along the castle facade, given their recent planting (1980s), are not worthy of protection. However, within the protection falls the planting of two old trimmed box trees in the corners of the farmhouse and the espalier fruit against the wall. ad c.: the landscape park, 19th century, extends eastward from the castle into the beck valley and occupies approximately 60% of the total complex area. The Eijserbeek flows not through the middle of the valley, but forms the northern boundary; directly on the northern bank begins the natural woodland slope; through the middle of the park runs parallel to the beck a low hawthorn hedge; in this hedge stands a number of old horse chestnuts in a semi-circle; other old specimens: planes, red beech, limes. The elongated pond originated from the contraction of several fish ponds; in the pond a small round island, on which a weeping willow. Between castle and pond, at the beginning of the 20th century, in the axis of the house at an almost perpendicular angle, a pattern of yew hedges was planted: three circles, which, viewed from the house, have progressively smaller diameters; they are connected by short straight hedges; here again clearly English influences. The hedges are just over 2 metres high and at the points where the circles transition into the straight sections have egg-shaped clipped spheres. ad d.: the grounds of the former kitchen garden (19th century or older) lie directly south of the castle complex on the road from Eys to Simpelveld; along the road an old hawthorn hedge. The current, modern ground layout (small ornamental gardens with various hedges) falls outside the protection. ad e.: the ornamental garden in an elongated rectangular form lies directly north of the house; the long sides are formed by high-clipped yew hedges (19th century early): irregular shapes of arches and spheres. At the end of the garden by the beck stood a circle of old chestnut trees, which were recently felled and replaced by young specimens. The original layout of the garden has disappeared; the current one is very recent and therefore falls outside the protection. ad f.: the pasture lies north of the entrance drive and is the most westerly situated ground of the estate; formerly fruit trees stood there. ad g.: the other grounds, in which the glasshouse stands (see under 7), lie between the outbuildings of the farmhouse and north of them, wedged between ornamental garden and pasture; its layout is at present untidy; should be regarded as yard and operational area.
