Inleiding

Introduction

RESIDENCE 'Jacobswoude' of the country house type, built in 1929 after a design by Larense architect Jan Rebel in a Cottage style influenced by Expressionism (Gooise country house style). Characteristic in Rebel's fairly extensive body of work of country houses and villas is the inspiration from contemporary English architecture. This appears among other things from the free grouping of spaces around the 'hall', whereby the relationship with the external environment also played an important role. Representative spaces such as dining room and living room overlook the water. Due to the mostly irregular floor plans, the houses are characterised externally usually by great plasticity.

The client, Mr. J.E. Boddens Hosang, was mayor of Jacobswoude from 1928 to 1935. After his departure, the house was purchased by the municipality in 1942, after which the country house functioned as the mayoral residence until the 1990s. In 1969 the garage was added in style. During a renovation, around 1975 the architectural firm Van Dam, Van der Sterre and Van Straten among other things installed the attic windows in both end gables, which did not detract from the original character of the country house. The original layout of in particular the ground floor with the various interior components such as built-in cupboards and the 'inglehook' have also been retained. However, at the last renovation (1996) the woodwork was dark stained.

The country house is rustically situated north of the village centre of Woubrugge on a spacious plot on the east bank of the Woudwetering. On the north side there is a steeking ditch, where originally a small boat shed stood. Various deciduous trees and shrubs stand in the garden.

N.B. The two outbuildings on the site are excluded from the protection.

Description

Freestanding building with extended garage, consisting of a basement, ground floor, first floor and attic storey, on a composite floor plan, to which transverse and steeking roof sections adjoin the protruding composite thatched gabled roof of the main volume, furnished with red and closed ridge boards. (Both end gables of the main volume are furnished with a later added composite attic window.)

The facades are built from grey brick (Flemish bond) with a roll course as a cover above the windows. For the garage and the first floor potash-burnt sections have been used. Terrace doors and single and composite window arrangements are largely furnished with simple leaded glass windows in heavy frames, partly furnished with shutters with red-white painted hourglass motif.

The front facade of the main volume has a symmetrical main layout with as an asymmetrical accent a chimney of moulded brick reaching to the ridge line, protruding slightly, on the left corner of the facade. In the middle of the ground floor under a round-arched relieving arch the entrance, consisting of moulded narrow sections and decoratively forged fittings, with on either side narrow, upright two-light windows. On the first floor above this is located the substantial composite, executed with leaded glass, window arrangement of the staircase under a slightly relieved roof screen, flanked by two two-light windows placed under the roof edge. The roof screen has in the middle an attached dormer with four-light window.

Against the left (southern) end gable is a shallow rectangular extension under a steeking roof, closed off by a bay with bevelled sides. Above this is a balcony with high moulded parapet and a segmental arched double opening door. The extension partly projects through a transverse arm at right angles to the main volume, which adjoins the main volume with a lower ridge line. The right roof screen (south) of this runs along the end gable of the main volume. The end gable of the transverse arm has a two-part window on the ground floor and first floor and a hexagonal window on the attic.

In the rear facade is a slightly arched two-part wooden door with fittings, under a wooden canopy resting on corbels; to the left of it a two-part window. Against the left corner a diagonally placed single-storey rectangular shallow transverse wing under a small steeking roof with lower ridge line adjoins the main roof. On the right side (southwest) is a double opening terrace door; the remaining facades have a two-light window. The terrace is closed off by a curved moulded low garden wall with roll course.

The original floor plan and layout of the spaces has been largely retained, whereby in the interior various original components are still present, such as in the living room the so-called 'inglehook' with fireplace constructed in fair brickwork and wooden bench seats, wall panelling with built-in cupboards in the former mayor's chamber, the wainscoting in the dining room and the hall with coupled round-arched moulded passage to the staircase and the draught lobby with leaded glass door.

Valuation

Country house 'Jacobswoude' is of general interest due to architectural and cultural-historical value as a representative example of a country house in Cottage style influenced by Expressionism from the 1920s of the 20th century.

The country house is of architectural-historical importance as a characteristic example from the body of work of Jan Rebel.

The structural components, both as regards interior and exterior, are well to fairly well preserved in main form, material use and detailing.

The country house is of importance due to situational value because of the rustic location by the water, whereby architecture and nature complement each other.
