Inleiding
BLOK van negen kleine gepleisterde WOONHUIZEN boven opslagkelders. De huizen zijn in de periode 1853-1854 gebouwd door W. (Hendrik) Klinkert, de stadstimmerman, op de locatie van de zeventiende eeuwse vestingwerken van Zwolle. Of de tongewelven van de kelders een restant zijn van de vestingwerken is onduidelijk. Toen de woningen werden gebouwd, gebruikte Klinkert de kelders voor opslag. De woningen zijn gebouwd in Neo-Classicistische trant. De woningen staan aan de binnenkant van de stadsgracht in het beschermd stadsgezicht van Zwolle. Het rijtje is tegen een wal op de kelders gebouwd, waardoor aan de straatkant (N) alleen de voorgevel van de woningen zichtbaar is en aan de stadsgracht (Z) ook de keldergevel eronder. Eind jaren tachtig van de twintigste eeuw is het complex gerestaureerd, waarbij in het dak kleine dakvensters zijn geplaatst. De keldergevels (Z) van de vier westelijke woningen dragen nog sporen van een verwijderde aanbouw.
Omschrijving De negen WOONHUIZEN zijn boven de kelders opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond over één bouwlaag plus een mezzanino, onder een zadeldak met rode Hollandse pannen en een overstekende goot. De gevels zijn witgepleisterd. In de noordgevel, de voorgevel, risaleert de gevel ter hoogte van de buitenste en de middelste drie woningen. Iedere woning heeft één deur met een bovenlicht met diagonale roeden en één venster met een achtruits schuifraam en drieruits bovenlicht. Tussen de begane grond en mezzanino een waterlijst. Boven het venster is op de mezzanino een liggend vierruits venster geplaatst. In de achtergevel risaleert de gevel van de vijf rechter woningen. Tien dubbele opgeklampte deuren, onder iets geprofileerde korfbogen, sluiten daar de kelders onder de tongewelven af. Een overstekende lijst op klampen scheidt keldergevels van de bovengelegen woonlagen. Boven de lijst schijnvoegen in het pleisterwerk, vervolgens een waterlijst en tenslotte per woning een T-venster. Bij de vier linker woningen ontbreken de schijnvoegen. De gevel op de begane grond is blind, op sporen van een verwijderde aanbouw na.

BLOCK of nine small plastered DWELLING HOUSES above storage cellars. The houses were built in the period 1853-1854 by W. (Hendrik) Klinkert, the city carpenter, on the site of the seventeenth-century fortifications of Zwolle. Whether the barrel vaults of the cellars are a remnant of the fortifications is unclear. When the dwellings were built, Klinkert used the cellars for storage. The dwellings were built in Neo-Classical style. The houses stand on the inside of the city moat in the protected townscape of Zwolle. The row of houses was built against an embankment on top of the cellars, so that from the street side (N) only the front facade of the dwellings is visible and from the city moat (S) also the cellar facade below it. Description The nine DWELLING HOUSES are erected above the cellars on a rectangular floor plan over one storey plus a mezzanine, under a gabled roof with red Dutch tiles and an overhanging gutter. The facades are whitewashed plaster. In the north facade, the front facade, the facade projects at the height of the outer and the middle three dwellings. Each dwelling has one door with a fanlight with diagonal glazing bars and one window with a rear-sash sash window and three-sash fanlight. Between the ground floor and mezzanine a drip moulding. Above the window a horizontal four-pane window is placed on the mezzanine. In the rear facade the facade of the five right dwellings projects. Ten double mortised doors, under slightly moulded basket arches, close off the cellars below the barrel vaults there. An overhanging moulding on brackets separates the cellar facades from the dwelling storeys above. Above the moulding false joints in the plasterwork, then a drip moulding and finally a T-shaped window per dwelling. In the four left dwellings the false joints are missing. The facade at ground level is blind, except for traces of a removed extension.
