Inleiding

Introduction

Villa De Drieburg was erected around 1885 in neo-Renaissance style on the presumed former site of the country house De Horst. Besides the names De Drieburg and Rusthof, the name Overhorst also occurs. The villa with garden and tea pavilion is a representative example of the development of this part of the Utrecht Heuvelrug, which in the 19th century developed from an estate area (the Stichtse Lustwarande) into an area where villas were built early on. De Drieburg is a characteristic example of this early villa development. Behind the villa is an octagonal wooden tea pavilion which falls outside national monument protection.

Description

The VILLA situated parallel to Hoofdstraat is erected on an approximately square ground plan and has two storeys beneath a hipped roof, covered with blue ridge tiles. The facades, constructed in cross bond, are provided at regular intervals all around with rendered, whitewashed speckled courses and cordon mouldings. The window frames are partly altered. Above the windows on the first storey are segment arches with coloured decorative tiles in the arch drums. Above the windows in the front and side facades is a keystone with diamond head motif applied. Below the windows of the second storey are ornamental fields with lattice motif in the projection and recessed decorated whitewashed fields with diamond heads in the right facade part. Between the cordon moulding and the roof gutter, the projection is likewise provided with decorated fields in lattice motif. The front or north facade consists on the left of a three-sided bay window over two storeys. The right part of the facade contains two window axes. The roof panel at the front of the projection is interrupted by a roof dormer beneath a tapered spire roof, covered with slate and provided with a spire. The roof dormer has wooden pilasters on either side of a casement window. The left side facade is symmetrical in layout with a central projection provided with a small advancement of one window axis. In the roof panel is a roof dormer beneath a flat roof placed which is provided with a two-light window and a cornice. On the right in the facade is a projection in the form of a wooden conservatory beneath a zinc hipped roof, above which a balcony with baldachin is set. In the conservatory are round arch windows with central mullions placed. To the left of the projection are casement terrace doors set in the facade with fanlights and side lights. In the second storey are two windows.

The right side facade contains in the middle a projection beneath a flat roof with equal gutter height, which contains the round arch-shaped entrance section. Originally there was a square tower superstructure with a spire roof on this. The second storey contains above a decorated facade field a window frame with pediment top. In the side facades of the projection are partly blocked-up windows with vertical accents in the masonry to be found. To the left of the projection is one window set in the facade in a slightly projecting facade part, which narrows above the window of the first storey. On the right the facade contains a window in each storey and a roof dormer beneath a flat roof with a two-light window and cornice. Against the rear facade of the main volume is a projection of two storeys beneath a flat roof with a lower gutter height. In this are some windows and a door to be found. Furthermore, a bell has been affixed here. The ground plan layout of the interior is partly still original. The house is surrounded by a garden with a landscape design with various old trees.

Valuation

The object is of architectural-historical value because of the building type and the detailing in neo-Renaissance style. The villa is of cultural-historical value and of ensemble value because of the development within the Stichtse Lustwarande.
