The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

The orangery of the Bornia Estate was originally a pigsty. In 1909 the building was converted by the Fukkink brothers into an orangery with a gardener's dwelling. This orangery was in turn extended with a chauffeur's dwelling. A striking feature of the object is the elongated floor plan.

Description

Located to the northeast of the main building of Bornia, ORANGERY of one storey on an elongated rectangular floor plan beneath an asymmetrical mansard roof, largely covered with smothered crosswise roof tiles. The roof on the south side of the roof, above the front facade, consists to a large extent of glazed strip windows. The roof plane is interrupted at the far right by a dormer window beneath a pitched roof. The facades above a grey-painted plinth are white-plastered. The T-shaped sash windows are provided with fanlights with glazing bars and shutters.

The south or front facade has seven arched rim panelled doors with louvers. The second door opening from the right is wider and executed as a composite door. The gardener's dwelling contains in the facade two windows and a door in a porch. The chauffeur's dwelling, which is located on the left, contains in the south facade a sash window.

The rear facade is asymmetrical in layout with infill consisting of a number of sash windows as well as several doors. The roof plane is interrupted at the level of the dwellings by dormers with pitched roofs and claws. The roof of the orangery section is partly of glass.

The left side facade of the chauffeur's dwelling has a door and two windows. On the upper floor three windows are to be found.

The floor plan layout is virtually original. Part of the orangery is fitted out as a winter garden and has wall cladding consisting partly of cement, partly of stucco, from which consoles project and into which mirrors are incorporated.

Evaluation

The orangery is of architectural-historical importance because of the building type of orangery and winter garden, because of the intactness of part of the interior and the striking floor plan. Moreover, the object is of ensemble value as part of the Bornia estate.
