Inleiding

Sturm gebouwd in 1930-1931.

Bijzonder interieur in Interbellum-architectuur.

Introduction

Northwest-southeast oriented single-aisle cruciform church designed by F.B. Sturm and built in 1930-1931. Tower placed on the eastern corner of the front façade. The choir has a four-part closure. Chapels are built on either side of the front façade. On the southern corner next to the choir is the sacristy, on the northern corner next to the choir is an auxiliary sacristy. The building, externally designed in fairly austere Interbellum architecture with Art Deco influences, possesses in its interior a remarkable, craftsmanship of high quality brick construction and a striking harmony in building form and decoration.

Description

Church and annexes are entirely built of brownish brick. The base of the façade masonry is accentuated as a plinth by horizontal, stepped brick bands. The side façades are finished with overhanging drip mouldings on corbels. The wall surfaces, inner and outer corners of the façades are provided with steeply inclined buttresses. The church windows are all shaped in parabolic form and provided with leaded glass. The front façade on the southeast side is executed as a large pointed gable, provided with a centrally placed, pointed gable-shaped entrance projection in which, in a slightly parabolic form, the double entrance door with leaded glass fanlight is incorporated. Before the entrance a curved natural stone staircase. On the ground floor, on either side of the entrance and in the façades of the tower, rows of narrow, rectangular leaded glass windows are placed. Above the entrance bay, in the pointed gable, is a large three-part parabolic window with brick mullions. The tower on a square plan has in all façade surfaces a vertical list on corbels, closed at the top by a balcony-like, fluted brick projection behind which is a gable opening. The upper part of the tower consists of a construction of four horizontal concrete bands with centrally placed clock faces. The clock faces are executed in coloured tilework and show the construction year. The tower is closed by a far overhanging roof foot on which is a projecting, slate-covered spire with cross and weathervane as finial. Against the northwest façade, part of the Theresa Chapel is built out with five façade surfaces, of which two surfaces have narrow windows, just as in the adjoining foot of the tower. The projection is provided with a hipped roof with slates.

The northeast side façade of the church is two bays wide up to the transept. The bays are separated by buttresses, per bay two windows. In the southeast side façade of the transept are two windows, in the gable-end of the transept one large window as in the front façade of the church. Below this window a flat-roofed projection whose façades are finished with brownish glazed roof covering tiles. The auxiliary sacristy, built against the blind northwest façade of the transept, is likewise flat-roofed and the façade is provided with roof covering tiles. In the northwest façade three barred leaded glass windows.

The side façade of the choir is blind. Of the four surfaces of the choir closure, the middle two are blind, in the others each one window. The southwest side of the church is executed like the opposite side. The sacristy is however considerably larger and possesses a group of two respectively five barred windows in the northwest façade with above it a roof dormer in the hipped roof and a group of four barred windows in the southwest façade. On the southwest corner, near the front façade, likewise a projection for the baptistry chapel.

The church is provided with a hipped roof in cross form with a small crossing tower which in form is related to the main tower, crowned by a metal cross. On some roof surfaces small triangular roof dormers for lighting the roof space are placed. The choir closure is provided with a four-part hipped roof. The roof surfaces are covered with brown-greenish, glazed, hollow tiles; towers and chapels are covered with slates.

Remarkable interior in Interbellum architecture. It is dominated by the large, entirely brick-built parabolic vaults of yellow-brown brick of which the springing begins at floor level. The vault ribs possess accents in black stone, the walls a frieze in black stone.

Against the walls a Stations of the Cross painted on plasterwork is mounted. In the gable-ends of the transept are built-out confessionals, each provided with three parabolic passages. At the northwest corner in the crossing is an entirely integrated, brick-built pulpit. In a niche in the adjoining transept façade is a Mary altar, in the eastern transept a Joseph altar. The choir is bounded at the front by brick-built communion rails.

The floor of the choir is laid with small, multicoloured motif tiles. The altar is placed on a marble pedestal with step treads. Above the entrance is the gallery with brick balustrade. The passages in the church are laid with red paving tiles and under the seating are wooden floor panels.

All doors in the church are executed in parabolic form provided with a cross decoration. Dating from the construction period are the stylistically matching copper sanctuary lamp and the central lighting chandelier.

From the choir, the entirely period-fitted and finished sacristy with acolyte's room on one side, and the auxiliary sacristy on the other side, are accessible.

The roof truss structure is accessible from the ascent to the gallery and has roof trusses constructed from wooden timber frames.

Valuation

Church of importance for cultural historical values and architectural historical values as one of the few and moreover well-preserved examples of this building tradition; in particular the interior is of importance from the point of view of remarkable and consistent construction and design.
