Inleiding

Introduction

The American wind motor of the Hercules Metallicus type with screw pump was installed as a MILL in 1922 for the drainage of the polder Zuidbroek (262 hectares) and has a capacity of 545 litres per rotor revolution (max. ± 20/min m3). Until that time the polder was drained by a wind scoop-wheel mill of which the foundations approximately 15 metres west of the wind motor are still partially visible. The polder Zuidbroek has been drained since the 15th century together with the polders Schuwachten and Den Hoek with the aid of windmills. The polders discharged jointly into the Loet which naturally drained into the IJssel. In 1859 a mill was built next to the sluice which was tasked with draining the Lekkerkerk basin when drainage by natural means was not possible due to high water levels of the IJssel. In 1868 the mill was replaced by the steam pumping station "Reinier Blok". Ten years later the pumping height was increased so that the pumping station could drain the polders Schuwacht and Den Hoek directly and the mills present there were demolished. The polder Zuidbroek was still drained separately, first by a windmill and from 1922 by the current wind motor.

At the end of the first century the nineteen mills already became fairly common in the United States after which they were introduced at the beginning of this century in the Netherlands. Due to the rougher weather these mills were not suitable for use in Europe so one soon switched to producing their own, more solid wind motors. This wind motor was manufactured at the Deutsche Windturbinen Werke in Dresden and was supplied by the trading company R.S. Stokvis from Rotterdam.

N.B. The mill was completely restored and automated in 1994. The mill nowadays drains again by wind power; in windless periods this is taken over by an electric motor which is placed next to the mill.

Description

Iron screw-wheel wind motor on a concrete substructure. The superstructure has a square ground plan and consists of an open, tapering iron construction of vertical posts which are divided by horizontal and cross-shaped connections into four bays. Halfway up the superstructure is an iron platform with a balustrade all around. Above this the construction becomes denser with multiple horizontal members.

The wind rotor is connected by an open iron construction to the substructures and consists of three iron rings to which the 21 blades are attached. The rotor has a total diameter of 6.6 metres. The tail consists likewise of an open iron construction and is provided with a double blade.

The mill has a steel screw pump of 1.81 metres length and a diameter of 1.05 metres. The screw pump is driven by a diesel motor.

Valuation

The wind motor of the Hercules Metallicus type from 1922 is of general architectural-historical importance as an example of a new concept for polder drainage.

The wind motor is of general cultural-historical importance as the last wind motor in South Holland.

The wind motor is of great visual importance as an eye-catcher in the landscape and because of the functional relationship therewith.
