Omschrijving
Omschrijving

Description
Description
The PSEUDO-BASILICA H. Mattheus is built up from a lower narthex, a higher three-aisled nave under a gabled roof, a transept with a substantial crossing tower, a shallow choir and multiple side chapels. The three-aisled nave with low side walls is subdivided into a broad central aisle and narrow side aisles, which function as ambulatories. The walls contain depressed pointed arch windows and some circular windows with leaded glass lights. On the right side is the sacristy, respectively the presbytery (separate monument number 509415).
The FRONT FACADE (south side) of the narthex ends in a spout gable with raised shoulder pieces closed off by a saddle ridge. Central in the gable is the entrance section with a circular window in the gable peak. A hand-formed stone, chamfered, depressed pointed arch with sandstone springing and keystone consisting of three rollers provides access to the portal. In the portal centrally is a double, clamped, wooden door with segmental arch with on the transverse sides a single identical door. On either side of the entrance section is a small depressed pointed arch window. At right angles to the side walls of the narthex is a side chapel with a small spout gable and rear gabled roof. Central in the spout gable is a depressed pointed arch window.
The LEFT SIDE WALL (west wall) of the nave adjoins the side chapel of the narthex and consists of four window bays. The bays are separated from each other by buttresses which taper twice, with in each window bay a depressed pointed arch window with stone fork tracery. Furthest left in the side wall the fourth window omits due to the placement of an identical side chapel at right angles to the ridge direction of the transept. In the spout gable of the transept is a window section consisting of a depressed pointed arch window with brick fork tracery on either side flanked by a single depressed pointed arch window. On either side of the window section is a buttress that tapers once.
In the REAR FACADE (north side) is right an identical side chapel at right angles to the transept, centrally the choir with blind spout gable and rear gabled roof placed against the substantial crossing tower and left the sacristy. The sacristy with rectangular ground plan is positioned transversely to the ridge direction of the transept. Central in the rear facade of the sacristy are five coupled depressed pointed arch windows with in the spout gable a circular window.
The RIGHT SIDE WALL (east wall) is identical to the left side wall.
The INTERIOR is virtually untouched. The Stations of the Cross and the wooden sculptures originate from the former church of 1876. The five late Gothic sculptures depict H. Catherine of Alexandria, H. Birgitta of Sweden, H. Gregory the Great, H. Anthony and H. Gertrude of Nivelles. The organ by the firm Elbertse dates from 1963 and in 1975 the bronze relief on the choir side was made by J. Pirkner to replace a wooden cross. Organ and organ case are not of value from the point of view of monument conservation. Dating from the time of the construction of the church are the wooden church pews with finely carved numbering and the leaded glass windows by Jos ter Horn. The central aisle consists of four brick cross vaults separated from each other by a wall arch. Pointed arch-shaped brick partition arches are supported by brick pillars on the division between the central aisle and the side aisles.
Valuation
The PSEUDO-BASILICA, dedicated to the saint Matthew, was built in 1935 according to design by J. SLUYMER in Delft School style and is:
- of architectural historical value because of the rarely well-preserved architecture in Delft School style by architect J. Sluymer,
- of urban planning value because of the siting of a Roman Catholic church in Delft School style in a relatively small settlement in a predominantly Protestant area,
- of cultural-historical value as a good example of a component of a well-preserved type consisting of church and presbytery.
