Inleiding
GASTHUIS, gesticht in 1702 voor de huisvesting van zes borgerweduwen en verbouwd in 1879 in een stijl waarin Neo-Classicistische en Ambachtelijk-traditionele elementen zijn te herkennen. Voor 1940 werd aan de westzijde een nieuw volume in overeenkomstige stijl aangebouwd. In 1978 werd het pand intern verbouwd van diakoniewoning tot opslagruimte en woonhuis. In 1979 werd het pand gerestaureerd en in 1981 werd het inpandig verbouwd tot vier wooneenheden. In 1990 is er een nieuwe voordeur ingezet. Het aangebouwde houten schuurtje aan de oostzijde komt wegens te weinig architectonische waarde niet voor bescherming van rijkswege in aanmerking.
Het gasthuis is gelegen binnen het beschermde stadsgezicht van Appingedam aan de oostzijde van de oude kern en vormt een representatieve entree naar de stad.
Omschrijving
Het verdiepingloze GASTHUIS op rechthoekige plattegrond is opgetrokken in rode baksteen met aan de zuidzijde een naar voren springend gepleisterd trasraam en band ter hoogte van de onderdorpels van de vensters. Het pand wordt gedekt door een schilddak waarop zwarte Friese golfpannen; drie gemetselde schoorstenen met afdekplaat; houten kroonlijst en goot; muurankers. De gevels worden geleed door getoogde zes- of negenruits vensters onder een strek; aan de zuidzijde onder een gepleisterde wenkbrauwboog.
Aan de voorgevel (zuidzijde) twee risalerende geveldelen waarin een negenruits venster beëindigd door een driehoekige dakkapel, afgedekt met zink; overkragende houten daklijst; twee driehoekige gepleisterde vlakken en natuurstenen gevelsteen. In de linker gevelsteen `Aanvang stadsvernieuwing stichting Appingedammer woningbouw. Deze steen is gelegd op 25 maart 1981 door Drs. Chr. de Loor Burgmeester van de stad Appingedam'. In de gepleisterde vlakken van de rechter dakkapel `Herbouwd Anno 1879' en in de gevelsteen `Gasthuis tot eere Gods en dienst van behoeftige weduwen der Gereformeerde religie gestigt door den seer eer en deugtsame Cornelius Alberts salgr in zijn levent borger en coopman der stadt Appingadam in den Heere ontslapen den 30 novembris 1702 sijn (d). Want de leifde van Christus dringt ons 2 Cor. 5:14'. De entree, omlijst door twee pilasters, bevindt zich tussen de risalerende geveldelen; niet-originele deur met getoogd bovenlicht onder een gepleisterde segmentboog; gemetselde stoep van twee treden. Aan weerszijden een negenruits venster. Aan de rechter zijde een negenruits venster en een dichtgemetselde deur omlijst door twee pilasters.
Aan de westzijde drie zesruits vensters en een houten dakkapel met vierruits venster, beëindigd met een fronton waarin een hijsbalk.
In de achtergevel (noordzijde) centraal een opgeklampte houten paneeldeur met getoogd drieruits bovenlicht onder rollaag; links twee negenruits vensters; rechts een zes- en negenruits venster waartussen een rond venster met decoratieve roedenverdeling en rollaag waaronder een niet-origineel rechthoekige venster.
Aan de oostgevel een zesruits venster en een niet-origineel aangebouwd schuurtje.
Het INTERIEUR komt wegens interne verbouwing niet voor bescherming van rijkswege in aanmerking.

Introduction
ALMSHOUSE, founded in 1702 for the housing of six widows of citizens and rebuilt in 1879 in a style in which Neo-Classical and Vernacular-traditional elements can be recognized. Before 1940 a new volume in corresponding style was attached to the west side. In 1978 the building was internally converted from deacon's dwelling to storage space and dwelling house. In 1979 the building was restored and in 1981 it was internally converted into four residential units. In 1990 a new front door was installed. The attached wooden shed on the east side does not qualify for protection by national heritage authorities due to insufficient architectural value.
The almshouse is located within the protected townscape of Appingedam on the east side of the old centre and forms a representative entrance to the town.
Description
The single-storey ALMSHOUSE on rectangular plan is built in red brick with on the south side a projecting plastered stone window surround and band at the height of the window sills. The building is covered by a hipped roof with black Frisian barrel tiles; three brick chimneys with covering plate; wooden cornice and gutter; wall anchors (ornamental). The facades are articulated by arched six- or nine-light windows under a band; on the south side under a plastered eyebrow arch.
On the front facade (south side) two projecting facade sections in which a nine-light window terminated by a triangular roof dormer, covered with zinc; overhanging wooden eave line; two triangular plastered surfaces and natural stone facade stone. In the left facade stone 'Beginning of urban renewal foundation Appingedammer housing construction. This stone was laid on 25 March 1981 by Drs. Chr. de Loor Mayor of the town of Appingedam'.
