Omschrijving
- als representatief voorbeeld van een deels in structuur en deels in detail gaaf bewaard gebleven tuin- en parkaanleg in landschapsstijl, door J.D. Zocher aangelegd tussen 1810 en 1818 binnen een nog in hoofdlijnen bestaande 16de- en 17de-eeuwse formele aanleg;
- vanwege het belang van de aanleg voor de geschiedenis van de tuin- en landschapsarchitectuur;
- vanwege de uit 1708 daterende 700 meter lange waterallee of grand-canal;
- vanwege de functioneel-ruimtelijke samenhang met de andere onderdelen van de buitenplaats;

Description
HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT.
Johan van Reede, lord of Renswoude and canon of Utrecht, purchased the estate Renswoude in 1623 and had, in the vicinity of the Reformed church built in 1639, a new house built here in 1654 after a design by Gijsbert van Vianen. The gardens laid out in the Dutch-classical style in this period acquired a more French-classical appearance in 1708, through amongst others the creation of the still existing and more than 700 metres long water avenue or grand canal, situated to the east of the castle. The grand canal is centrally provided with a widening ("Grote kom") and is fed at its starting point by means of a small lock. On a map from circa 1769 (no longer in its original state) a formal park layout is visible with a moated castle and both outhouses and behind the castle a large rectangular parterre-de-broderie within the same moat. Within the outer moat to the south of the house and the house lay copses, coppice woods, orchards and vegetable gardens, divided by winding paths. Several basins were incorporated in this layout, of which now a round basin and a crescent-shaped pond have been preserved. The map shows a formal layout which as regards the boundaries, course of the avenues and the infrastructure corresponds in broad outline with the present situation. Also the avenue still existing as part of the park layout, turning in a sharp angle and planted with avenue trees leading to the church, as well as the formal square around the church, is already indicated on this map. Between 1810 and 1818 the park was remodelled in landscape style within the formal layout by J.D. Zocher sr. The situation created at that time is now decisive for the garden and park layout of the country house. The old water features were remodelled in landscape style; thus the moat and pond behind the house, together with the round basin to the north-west of the castle, were remodelled into one large pond. To the north of the castle a peninsula was created, with a hilly part in which an ice house (no longer in existence) was built. The island to the west of the house is a remnant of the parterre-de-broderie. The crescent-shaped pond to the south of the house was likewise given a more naturally flowing outline and at the west side of the so-called "Bloemstuk", the open space to the south of the castle, a hill was created. Of the vegetable garden and orchard situated to the south only the north-south running central path was preserved; the orchard has however been recently restored. The Duivenweide situated in the east of the layout and the Spikhorsterwei situated in the south-west have been open pasture areas from the 17th century to the present day. The present Lindenlaan to the south of the castle came into existence after 1818 and before circa 1850, and replaces a connecting canal to the vegetable garden which was then filled in. This connecting canal was a reduced version of the grand canal. Behind the canal lay a pond in a Louis XIV form which is now preserved in landscape form and behind the pond lay a raised plateau with steps likewise in Louis XIV forms, of which the foundation is now buried in the ground. To the north-west of the grand canal the rectangular wooded area which served as an overgarden for the rectory ("Domineesbosje") and which was already part of the layout of the country house before 1705, has been preserved, to the south-west lies an open pasture area. From the castle two, still existing, vistas were created: one over the pond between two scenic wings with amongst others European beech towards the dovecote and a vista onto the Spikhorsterweide which as a park meadow belongs to the country house. To the south-west of the Spikhorsterweide lies an open area with some tree groups, which closes off the country house in this corner.
Valuation
HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the historic country house Renswoude is of general importance:
- as a representative example of a garden and park layout in landscape style that has been preserved partly in structure and partly in detail, laid out by J.D. Zocher between 1810 and 1818 within a formal layout from the 16th and 17th century that still exists in its main features;
- because of the importance of the layout for the history of garden and landscape architecture;
- because of the 700 metre long water avenue or grand canal dating from 1708;
- because of the functional-spatial coherence with the other components of the country house;
- because of the spatial coherence with the surrounding landscape.
