The register's description

Inleiding

- de ruimtelijke en functionele samenhang van de complexonderdelen onderling zowel als met de restanten van de kustbatterij Katwijk A 1 tot en met 109, onderdeel van de Duitse Atlantikwall in het Nederlandse kustgebied;

Introduction

Two identical COMBAT SHELTERS A40 and A51 (25e, 25f), so-called Doppelgruppenunterstanden, type R-502, specially designed in 1939 for the Westwall. The shelters are connected via half-open mortared communication trenches with the central command posts. Bunker A51 is located west of the command bunker and south of the Marine Artillery Command Post. Bunker A40 is located north of the command post.

Description

The combat shelters of reinforced concrete, situated partly beneath the dune, have a blind front facade that is rounded at the top. Behind the two iron access doors with grilles a staircase leads downward into a hall. The two halls provide access to the centrally located gas lock. Via the gas lock the two interconnected guard rooms can be reached. The right guard room provides access to the former observation cupola, which has a half-round wall on the right side (north facade).

Valuation

Combat shelters of general cultural-historical importance:

- as a representative remnant of the Atlantic Wall which the German occupier had constructed along the Dutch coast during the Second World War.

Combat shelters of general architectural-historical importance:

- as a representative example of German concrete bunker construction from the Second World War.

Combat shelters of general importance:

- due to the reasonable degree of integrity in principal form, material use and detailing.

The ensemble values of the combat shelters consist of:

- the spatial and functional coherence of the complex components with each other as well as with the remnants of the coastal battery Katwijk A 1 through 109, part of the German Atlantic Wall in the Dutch coastal region;

- the characterizing location in the dune area of Katwijk.
