Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Roman Catholic church with front tower, built in 1869-1870 in neo-gothic style after a design by architect P. Soffers. The interior was completed in 1871 and on 2 May 1871 the church was consecrated. The bricks for the construction came from the nearby former brickworks in the Burgpolder.
Description
Constructed of red brick basilica and front tower; natural stone plinth, natural stone windows with tracery and stained glass or decorative painted glass and natural stone coping plates. The main ground plan is cross-shaped with partially projecting, square front tower, slightly projecting transepts and choir. Against choir and transepts various small extensions.
The tower is four storeys and a tower spire high. The lower three storeys are on a square base, whilst the upper storey has an octagonal base and is crowned by an octagonal tower spire. The corners on the east side of the lower three storeys are strengthened by tapering buttresses. The entrance section is located under a natural stone, moulded pointed arch with in the arch drum a stone relief depicting Saint Martinus; double wooden door. The two storeys above the entrance are each provided with a pointed arch window with tracery. The third storey is provided with clockfaces and is finished by a wall section with a moulded brick arch frieze. Of the octagonal structure each face is provided with louvres and finished by a spout gable with round window at the top and crowned by a cross. The slate-covered, octagonal tower spire is crowned by a cross with weather vane.
Against both sides of the tower is located a square stair turret, slightly more than three storeys high with pointed arch-shaped niches in the brickwork, provided with small window panes. The stair turrets are crowned by pinnacles with natural stone coping. Adjacent to the stair turrets are the front gables of the side aisles. The front gable to the south of the entrance section contains a side entrance with above it a pointed arch window with stained glass. The front gable to the north contains a pointed arch window with decorative painted glass. Both front gables are at the end crowned by a pinnacle with natural stone coping. The side gables (north and south) of the church are divided by brick buttresses into six bays, whereby the first bay from the front is half as wide as the remaining bays. The remaining five bays each contain a pointed arch window with stained glass at the location of the side aisles, which are provided with a lean-to roof against the nave.
Beneath the window in the fourth and sixth bay from the front gable is a small extension. Above the lean-to roof there are likewise buttresses in the gable of the nave and in each bay, except in the first -half- from the tower, a round window with quatrefoil. In the roof plane of the gabled roof of the nave are two roof dormers. The transept has in the gable a large pointed arch window with tracery and stained glass. On the corners buttresses. The choir likewise contains pointed arch windows. In the southwest corner an extension with sacristy.
The gabled roofs and lean-to roofs are covered with slate in Maas-bond. The church is provided with an open, wooden, octagonal crossing tower with slender spire and cross.
The neo-gothic interior is wholly plastered; amongst other things composite columns with foliated capitals and black-and-white tiled floor.
