Omschrijving

Description
METAHEERHUIS or morgue, component of the complex of the Nederlands-Israëlitische Begraafplaats at Diemen, built in 1931 to the design of the Jewish architect Harry Elte Phzn. (1880-1944) of Amsterdam. Alongside several synagogues and Jewish hospitals, Elte also designed in 1933 the reception building and the metaheerhuis at the Jewish cemetery at the Googweg 6 in Muiderberg, which in their design connect to the example at Diemen.
The Metaheerhuis is situated at the rear section of field B, at the boundary ditch with a bridge to field C.
The doors and cornice of the building have been renewed and altered. The overhanging continuous moulding just below the eaves has been removed. The low walls on either side of the step for the entrance indicated in the design have been removed or never executed. The original leaded glass in the northwest facade has been replaced by yellow cathedral glass.
Description
The expressionistically designed metaheerhuis is built in brick on a concrete plinth and light foundation. The building consists of three rectangular masses placed against each other: the reception room and two lower and small extensions with the space for the Kohaniem (the priests) and a storage.
The front facade (SW) contains a projecting lower portal section with a decorative frame of three brick bands, making use of the finished side of the brick which is usually not visible. The entrance with double door is flanked by mortared flower boxes. The recessed section of the main mass contains under the cornice four square windows.
The left side facade (NW) contains in the axis three vertical window strips over the full height above the plinth set off with a toothed moulding. Hardstone blocks form the sills.
Against the right side facade (SO) are situated the two lower masses. In the upper part of the facade of the reception room are four vertical window strips filled with coloured leaded glass (small rectangles predominantly in yellow and white, further in blue and red) and with a hardstone block as sill.
The space for the Kohaniem has its own door on the southwest; the southeast facade thereof contains a window of three narrow glass strips. According to Jewish practice the Kohaniem may not come into contact with the dead. They therefore observe the ritual in the metaheerhuis from this separate room, which is connected to the main room by means of a wooden trellis window directly opposite the platform. This room is tiled on the floor like the main room and has a white tile wainscot.
The storage is accessible via a door on the southwest and contains a large double door on the northeast. This section is covered with hardstone grave markers.
The rear facade (NO) is corresponding to the front facade with the exception of the decorative door frame.
The interior of the reception room. The floor of the reception room is laid with tiles: a grey field with a white-black border motif. The walls have a wainscot of black natural stone with fixed benches furnished with wooden seating in the corners and are otherwise plastered white. The door frames of the opposite equal doors repeat the band motif of the exterior. The window in the northwest facade was removed in 1991 but the commemorative plaque is still present: 'TO THE NED. ISR. CHIEF SYNAGOGUE IN AMSTERDAM/ ON THE OPENING OF ITS NEW CEMETERY AT DIEMEN/ PRESENTED BY THE NEW ISRAELITE BURIAL ASSOCIATION.' To the right of the window a large black natural stone text plaque has been placed with a Hebrew text and alongside an explanation: 'On the occasion of the 300th anniversary/ of the Ned. Isr. Chief Synagogue in Amsterdam/ at the New Year festival 5696 - 28 September 1935 this/ commemorative plaque was presented to her as a gift by her member Anton Klinkhamer.' Below the high window there is against the northwest wall a wooden platform with a lectern. This is opposite the wooden trellis window for the Kohaniem.
