Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Former TOWN HALL of Denekamp, designed in the period 1919-1920 by architect K.L. Croonen (Oldenzaal) in an eclectic architectural style with elements in the early 1800s and Dutch neo-Renaissance architectural style. The western side facade is situated on a small square. The rear facade (S) has been altered at ground floor level. Nowadays (1998) the building is in use as a music school and by the Foundation for the Welfare of the Elderly.
Description
The town hall is built in brown brick over two storeys on a rectangular ground plan, under a hipped roof with tiles in Dutch bond. The front facade (N) is articulated by ashlar bands executed in brick on the corners and beside the central bay. An overhanging gutter line on brackets crowns the facades at the top and on the central bay stands a pediment. The front facade (5 window axes) and the western side facade (3 window axes) are provided with sandstone cross windows in the windows, under moulded brick dentils and flanked by shutters with black hourglasses on a white background with a black border. The main entrance is located in the front facade in the central projection, in a porch under a balcony. In the porch above the wooden doors with panels and semicircular fanlight a cross-ribbed vault on sandstone ornamental consoles is installed. The ribs are made of red, the spandrels of yellow brick. The balcony above the entrance is provided with a sandstone balustrade and in the tympanum on the central bay a coat of arms with garlands is carved in sandstone. In the western side facade in the middle of the three window axes a second door is placed. This is, like the main entrance, emphasized by a projection and a tympanum, here filled with glass. The rear facade (S) and the eastern side facade are less representational and not symmetrically designed. In the eastern side facade cloister windows with shutters are placed. The rear facade is characterized by various sizes of windows (without shutters), including the three-light window with leaded glass which indicates the central location of the stairwell. In the building, among other things, the wall panelling of brown and yellow glazed tiles on the ground floor in the hall and corridors has been preserved. A substantial wooden staircase leads to a landing with a large three-light window with stained and leaded glass (presented by Mayor Hoogklimmer). The beam ceiling and the fireplace in the council chamber also contain references to this Mayor. In the council chamber moreover the wooden wall panelling is still present.
Valuation
The former town hall is of general cultural, architectural-historical and urban planning importance on account of:
- the original function of the building as a town hall
- the eclectic architectural style with elements in the early 1800s and Dutch neo-Renaissance architectural style
- the image-determining location of the town hall in the old centre in relation to the two churches
