Inleiding
Omschrijving

Description
Introduction
The GASTHUIS VREDENHOF is an elongated building block of two-room dwellings, located at the edge of the village, on the southern boundary line of and just outside the protected village view. The front facade is oriented towards the east. In front of the row of dwellings lies a strip of front gardens with pavements in yellow brick. Three WATER PUMPS and WATER WELLS are present here. At the rear are small gardens, located at the edge of the terp excavated in 1877. This almshouse for single women was built as an extension of the already existing Gasthuis Vredenhof on the Dubbele Streek. The old Vredenhof was founded in 1744 by Agnes Alida Huber, owner of among other things the country house Schatzenburg and adherent of the religious movement Practical Christianity of the English Puritans and German Pietists. Agnes wished with the almshouse to ease the plight of single women. The new Vredenhof was built on the instructions of the guardians of the time (H. Wielinga Huber and J. Lambertus Huber) in 1872. The facade stone states: "The first stone of this building was laid on 4 June 1872 by Lambertus Johannes Huber H son aged 9 years". In 1872 the first three blocks of six 'chambers' were built and the porter's lodge, to the design of architect-builder C.S. Reitsma from Leeuwarden. In 1873 the following three blocks were built and in 1876 the last three. These were built by builder R. Feikema. The building block was built in Artisanal-traditional style. Like the old one, the new Gasthuis Vredenhof was intended exclusively for needy women. The row of dwellings is still rented, according to the statutes of the foundation, exclusively to women. In the fifties and eighties the relatively small dwellings were internally altered. During the last renovation, with the exception of no. 18, two 'chambers' were combined into one residential unit. No. 40 is currently used as a bicycle storage.
Description
The row of dwellings of the new Gasthuis Vredenhof is built of brown brick on a rectangular ground plan. Yellow bricks are used for the moulded cartouches with single-thickness moulding of brown bricks. Plasterwork is used for the southern side facade and the southern half of the rear facade. The one storey high building is covered by a gabled roof with black unglazed Frisian tiles, from which twelve chimneys and the roofs of the stepped gables project. Roof and stepped gables are finished with a profiled moulding. In the front facade wooden panel doors and rectangular windows alternate rhythmically. The front doors on moulded stoep have a rectangular fanlight with cast-iron tree of life and are located beneath the nine stepped gables. Here are two two-pane trapezoidal-shaped windows. The rectangular nine-pane sash windows are finished with a high moulding.
The northern moulded side facade is blind and is finished with a moulded stepped gable with profiled tympanum-shaped moulding, in which a triangle moulded in yellow bricks is placed. The southern side facade is plastered. At the top is a profiled plastered triangle. In the rear facade old and new wooden windows and doors alternate. In the middle of the rear facade a passage has been sealed and at that spot an extension has been placed.
Through the combining of the residential units the INTERIOR of the dwellings has been largely altered in terms of layout. In dwelling no. 16 the original wooden chimney mantelpiece is still present. The dwelling at no. 18 is original in terms of layout and is still provided with the original doors and cupboard doors. The attics with segmented barrel vaults are still largely in original condition.
Valuation
The new Gasthuis Vredenhof is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:
- as an expression of a cultural and social development;
- because of the quality of the design;
- because of the use of materials and ornamentation;
- for the appearance of the village;
- because of the architectural integrity of the exterior;
- because of the historical relationship with the old Gasthuis Vredenhof from 1744 which is already a national monument;
- in relation to the visual integrity of the village surroundings;
- because of the functional rarity.
