Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The Roman Catholic CHURCH "Maria Geboorte" at Dronrijp was built in 1839, designed by architect A. van der Moer in Waterstaatsstijl; the contractor was P.J. de Wal from Leeuwarden. In 1939 the east-facing front facade with tower was replaced by a new facade in the style of the Delft School. At the same time a new rectory was also built on the south side. The new front facade with tower (and the rectory) were designed by Amsterdam architect J.M. van Hardeveld. The patron was the vestry of the Roman Catholic church. The image of Mary on the church facade (1939) was created by the Hungarian M. Hoffer, teacher of drawing and handicrafts in Leeuwarden. The sculptural work in the church, Mary and Joseph, is by J.P. Maas Loos from Haarlem; the paintings, the large painting above the high altar and the Stations of the Cross, are by the artist Otto de Boer (Woudsend), from 1839 and 1841 respectively.
Description
The church, of the hall church type, has a broadly rectangular floor plan; at the rear, a sacristy has been built across the full width of the nave and side aisles, accessible from the church. The church building is covered by a complex roof: above the nave with rising light well a gabled roof with new black Dutch tiles and above the side aisles and the sacristy lean-to roofs. For the building section from 1939, large hand-moulded bricks were used for the base, small reddish-brown hand-moulded bricks for the first and second storey and the tower. The side facades, the rear facade and the sacristy from 1839 are built in brown brick. The section between the segmental arch windows is clad with wooden boards. The tower consists of a tall base with two buttresses and two chamfers on two sides. In the upper storey (with biforate windows) the three bells were placed around 1945. Above this a balustrade and the zinc-clad crown. The zinc lantern is surrounded by columns with a cornice above and a weathervane as a rooster. The main entrance is placed in the tower: a wide wooden door in rusticated surround with, above a heavy lintel, a fanlight with segmental arch and leaded glass. Further, from bottom to top, the image of Mary with Child on a pedestal, the date 1839, and a densely set vertical window.
On the south side, in the angle formed by tower and front facade, a polygonal stair tower with vestibule has been placed. On the north side the baptismal chapel and a window with fanlight and leaded glass at the front and a side entrance on the north side. Against the southern side facade the coal storage with furnace is placed. Both side facades are blind and are covered by a lean-to roof that passes into the light well with rabbet. Here sit five segmental arch multi-light windows on each side. New windows have been inserted in the rear facade in the sacristy section projecting to the west.
The INTERIOR of the church in Waterstaatsstijl is original in its layout, also with regard to the entrance vestibule and the tower from 1939, which are clad with yellow and blue glazed brick. In the hall six large hollow Doric columns carry a high entablature under tall light wells. The furnishings include, among others, the first two wooden pews from 1839 and the others from circa 1900, the four neogothic painted candelabra, a silver Godlamp, the painting behind the high altar - which depicts the glorification of Christ - and the 14 Stations of the Cross from 1848, both by Otto de Boer, the confessional from 1895, which bears the inscription in neogothic letters: COR CONTRITUM ET UMILIATUM / DEUS NON DESPIACIAS. In the south-western corner an old side altar with renewed tabernacle, on which the plaster image of Mary on wooden brackets with painted neogothic motifs in the background, by J.P. Maas Loos. On the other side, also by Maas Loos, the image of Joseph.
At the entrance vestibule the statue of Holy Sorrow, an image of the saint Francis and the Passion Cross from 1890, donated to the church on the occasion of a popular mission. In the ceiling three stuccoed rosettes in relief with symbols representing Faith, Hope and Love. Three copper chandeliers hang in the middle of these. Behind the gallery from 1939 the single-manual organ, made by L. van Dam and Sons in 1882. The wooden organ case is furnished with rich carved work. In the baptismal chapel a vase-shaped, blue-green baptismal font with fish motif and cross.
