Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The LOCK was designed in 1927 by the Provincial Water Board Service and built by the firm W. and H. Visser in Lemmer. The lock is of the three-way lock type, of which three are known in the Netherlands.
The takeover (1917) and improvement (1922) of the Jonkersvaart, which was in a deplorable state, together with the engineering works located therein belonging to the Heloma family by the Provincial Government, the canalisation of the Linde (1927) and a change in water management in the Land van Vollenhove (Ov.), namely the planned clearing of the Ossenzijl in 1922, led to the construction of the three-way lock, whereby an old lock and sluice gate (Helomasluis and Helomasas, 1775) were replaced. Construction of the present lock began in 1927 and was completed in 1928. Apart from its significance as a shipping connection, the lock also served a sea-defence function, namely to prevent tidal surges of seawater from the Zuiderzee. The lock head towards the Helomavaart was equipped with a set of ebb and (storm) flood gates. In order to serve the sea-defence function, this lock head was also built higher (2.48 +NAP) than both of the others, while a dyke was constructed around the lock chamber.
The lock head on the Beneden-Lindezijde was extended in 1930 and provided with a second set of ebb gates, which are now missing. This supplementary work was likewise carried out by the contractors W. and H. Visser from Lemmer.
Following the creation of the IJsselmeer and the Noordoostpolder, the dyke around the lock chamber was excavated (to 0.88 +NAP) and the raised lock head was extended. The closure of the upper section of the Linde and the construction of the Mr. H.P. Linthorst Homansluis (1973) rendered the Three-way Lock redundant.
Within a more complex context, the lock complex also includes the lock keeper's house on the east side of the lock on a raised plot, likewise built by the contractors W. and H. Visser. The house is located at the height of the former dyke around the lock chamber. Along the banks of the reaches towards the upper course of the Linde/Kop van Overijssel and the lower course of the Linde stand the mooring poles. With regard to national monument protection, these components are of minor significance.
Outside the scope of national monument protection fall the lower-situated and later-added lock keeper's house with outbuildings and a drainage lock in the bypass channel north of the Three-way Lock from 1923.
Description
The lock chamber, 45 m in length and 14 m in width, has three exits. At the exit towards the upper reach of the Linde, the lock chamber has a bend, a so-called transverse head. The lock is built in brown brick with a floor bottom covered with brushwood. The gate posts and thresholds are of granite. The pointed gates are of wood. The lock heads are covered with granite coping stones and at the pivot points of the lock gates the entire corner is built up in granite. On the three lock heads stands a winch for operating the sluice in the bypass channel. In the lock heads of the upper and lower reaches of the Linde there were originally several lock gates. On the lock gates of the lower reach of the Linde a narrow bridge deck has been fitted with balustrades of angle iron on both sides. On the lock gates of the upper reach of the Linde a balustrade of angle iron. The lock head towards the lower reach was extended in 1930 and provided with an extra set of pointed gates, now removed. In the lock head towards the Helomavaart hangs a double set of pointed gates, originally ebb and flood gates. The flood gates have been lowered. On the lock gates a balustrade of iron tubes. On the edge of the lock wall iron hoisting pins.
Valuation
The Three-way Lock from 1927 is of general cultural-historical and water-management historical importance:
- because of the exceptional significance of the structure as the end point of water-management developments, both in the Linde valley and for a larger area crossing provincial boundaries,
- because of the high degree of significance as an exceptional expression of a typological development,
- because of the exceptional significance of the structure for the appearance of the region, in particular the Linde valley,
- because of the high degree of structural integrity of the lock,
- because of the important tourist value of the complex, both with regard to tourist cycling traffic and recreational navigation,
- because of the high degree of uniqueness of a three-way lock on a national scale.
