Inleiding

Introduction

The LOCK with SWING BRIDGE was constructed in 1914 to replace a lock with a wooden chamber from 1850 on the same site. The construction of the earliest lock on the site was related to the establishment of the Groote Veenpolder in Weststellingwerf in 1847 with an area of approximately 3500 hectares. The polder was drained by six polder mills, two of which, from 1855 and 1871 respectively, still stand in the vicinity of the lock. Both mills are national monuments.

To commemorate the construction of the present lock in 1914, a commemorative stone was incorporated in the lock head on which the designer J. van der Veen is mentioned as supervisor and W.O. Pander as daily supervisor. The reclamation area the Rottige Meenthe, now a nature reserve of the State Forestry Commission, was opened up via the Scheene. Between 1850 and 1930 there was considerable ship traffic, particularly peat transport, on this waterway. The lock forms the connection between the Scheene and the Jonkers or Helomavaart. The lock was purchased by the State Forestry Commission from the Water Board the Groote Veenpolder in Weststellingwerf and subsequently restored in the years 1973-1975 and 1985.

Near the lock some buildings developed consisting of a lock keeper's house, a café and a small ship slipway. These buildings are still recognisable in the presently existing (recreational) dwellings to the south of the lock. They fall outside the scope of national monument protection.

Description

The lock consists of a rectangular chamber with an inlet and outlet which are 'offset' in relation to each other. At the bottom of the lock heads is a brick arch of the bypass channel with an iron winch on the lock heads. On the inner side of the eastern lock head a commemorative stone was attached in 1914 to commemorate the construction. The walls of the lock chamber are built in brown brick. On the edges of the lock chamber a guide rail has been fitted. The lock heads are likewise built in brown brick and covered with coping stones of Norwegian granite. Where the wooden lock gates are hung, the entire corner is built up in granite stones.

Over the western lock head lies a wooden swing bridge characteristic of this region. It consists of a narrow wooden bridge deck with balustrades. The pivot point is on the eastern lock head and consists of wheels on a disc. The counterweight of the bridge deck is a stone, which is stored in a wooden box.

Valuation

The Scheene Lock with swing bridge is of general cultural-historical importance:

- because of the high degree of significance as an exceptional expression of a socio-economic development within this municipality, particularly the peat extraction of the Groote Veenpolder since 1847,

- because of the exceptional significance of the structure through its location and in relation to the development of the region, particularly through the proximity of two (of the originally six) peat polder mills,

- because of the high degree of significance of the structural and visual integrity in relation to the built environment,

- because of the very high degree of significance of the structure in the historical spatial relationship with the polder and the waterways located therein,

- because of the exceptional significance through the presence of a swing bridge over the lock characteristic of this region,

- because of the high degree of integrity and originality.
