The register's description

Inleiding

Omschrijving

Introduction

The double RAILWAY BRIDGE over the small river Linde is one of the older fixed river crossings of the railways in Friesland. Although the railway line was laid in 1863 by the former State Railways, the construction of the double railway bridge dates from 1923-1924. At the time of the normalisation of the Linde, in the period 1922-1927, the old bridge was replaced at this location because the NS did not want to relocate this bridge. The construction company Kloos from Kinderdijk carried out the work. During the Second World War the line Wolvega-Zwolle was single-track; after the war the double railway bridge was restored.

Description

The double railway bridge consists of four riveted truss girders and reinforcement plates at the intersections of the profile beams. The bridge has a span of approximately 25 metres. No carpenters' marks have been found on the girders. The abutments are built in brown bricks with corner reinforcements of concrete. The truss girders rest at the ends by means of iron supports on a composite concrete substructure.

Valuation

The double railway bridge from 1923-'24 is of general cultural and architectural-historical importance:

- as a particular expression of the development of railway architecture,

- because of its significance as an industrial-archaeological object, in particular as a typological example of a small fixed railway bridge in the Netherlands,

- because of the reasonable degree of rarity of this type of double railway bridge in the Netherlands,

- because of the reasonable degree of originality in relation to visual integrity in the landscape setting.
