Inleiding
Het pakhuis is in 1894 gebouwd voor de meubelmakerij Gebr. Monsieur, een bedrijf dat van 1840 tot in de jaren zeventig in Steenwijk was gevestigd. Het is gebouwd naar een ontwerp van de Steenwijker architect B. Rouwkema, die in de decennia rond de eeuwwisseling veel nog bestaande panden in Steenwijk heeft ontworpen.
Omschrijving
Het pakhuis heeft een slanke voorgevel en omvat vier bouwlagen met een zolderverdieping onder een met pannen gedekt, afgeknot zadeldak. Het pand is op de begane grond voorzien van rechtgesloten dubbele inrijdeuren. De drie verdiepingen hebben een identieke gevelindeling, bestaand uit een dubbele laaddeur met aan weerszijden een rond gietijzeren venster met kalkzandsteen in de omlijsting. De ronde vensters en de laaddeuren met hijsbalk op de zolderverdieping zijn kleiner dan de gevelopeningen in de overige bouwlagen. De geveltop van de symmetrische voorgevel is voorzien van een deklijst en wordt bekroond door een kleine tuit met smeedijzeren decoratie. De zijgevels zijn voorzien van ronde venstertjes en muurankers.
Waardering
Het pakhuis is een mooi en gaaf voorbeeld van een type gebouw dat in deze karakteristieke, 19e-eeuwse vorm zeldzaam is geworden. Vanwege zijn typologische bijzonderheid en oorspronkelijke functie heeft het pand zowel architectuur-historische betekenis als cultuur-historische waarde voor Steenwijk.

The warehouse was built in 1894 for the furniture-making business Gebr. Monsieur, a company that was established in Steenwijk from 1840 until the nineteen-seventies. The warehouse has a slender front facade and comprises four storeys with a loft storey under a hipped roof covered with tiles. The building is provided on the ground floor with closed double loading doors. The three upper storeys have an identical facade layout, consisting of a double loading door with a round cast-iron window on either side with sandstone in the surround. The round windows and the loading doors with hoist beam on the loft storey are smaller than the facade openings in the other storeys. The gable top of the symmetrical front facade is provided with a drip moulding and is crowned by a small spout with wrought-iron decoration. The side facades are provided with small round windows and ornamental wall anchors.
