Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Roman Catholic CHURCH BUILDING in longitudinal arrangement, built in 1905 to the design of P.J. Bekkers. The church building dedicated to St. John the Baptist is markedly situated on the east side of the Dorpsstraat. Stylistically the church can be regarded as an example of brick architecture in neo-gothic style.
Description
Three-aisled cruciform basilica with square tower to the west, five-sided closed choir to the east and three-sided closed transept arms of the cross aisle. The exterior is built mainly in red brick with the use of hard stone at the structural points and a harder orange-red brick around the openings of the windows, sound holes and doors. The masonry has a vertical articulation through stepped buttresses against the nave, transept arms and side aisles and against the corners of the tower. This vertical articulation is continued in the pointed-arch windows which in the side aisles, in the choir and in the closures of the transept arms are always high and single and in the clerestory are always lower and always coupled in threes. The pointed-arch windows coupled in threes always have a higher window in the middle. The pointed-arch windows have iron frames with predominantly non-figurative leaded glass, stained glass is found among other places in the choir windows. The tower consists of four stacked segments which at the top are decorated among other things with arch friezes. The lowest segment contains the main entrance to the church. The segment above it has on the front (W) three coupled pointed-arch windows with higher central window. The segment above that has mainly spared fields. The top segment has three coupled sound holes on all four sides and is closed off with a rendered balustrade. This balustrade has on all four sides a centrally positioned clock face against a small rendered top gable with half-hipped roof. On the top segment stands the octagonal spire with roof dormers near the top on four sides. The spire is crowned by a latin cross on a sphere. The spire is currently covered with mastic, but is in origin as are the compound gabled roof of nave and cross aisle, the octagonal roof turret placed on the crossing, the lean-to roofs above the side aisles and the various tent roofs above the smaller (stair-)towers, covered with slate in Dutch bond. On the various ridge points are roof-ridge cresting and various iron cresting, among other things with cross and sphere motifs. Either side of the tower are the gable ends of the side aisles with the side entrances. These side aisles have in the north-western and south-western corner a three-sided extension, among other things for the purpose of the baptistry.
The nave consists from the west side up to the transept of three bays, the cross aisle in width approximately corresponds with two bays and the choir has up to the beginning of the choir closure a length of one bay. The transept arms of the cross aisle have a length of two bays up to the beginning of the three-sided closures. Each bay of the transept arms has an extension to the east with a chapel with three-sided closure. Nave, cross aisle and side aisles have four-part cross-ribbed vaults which form the closure of an elevation consisting of arcade, triforium and clerestory. The arcade rests on polished columns of red granite. The arcade behind the choir rests on polished columns in grey granite. The capitals are as are the beginnings and closures of the small columns executed in natural stone. The masonry of the load-bearing elements used in the interior such as transverse arches and ribs, is executed mainly in red brick. With the ribs green-made brick has also been used.
The church interior still contains various original components such as the priest's choir with high altar and tiled floor, the two side altars, the seating plan and fittings for lighting.
Valuation
The church building is of general importance from a cultural and architectural-historical point of view by reason of the great integrity and originality of the exterior, the completeness of the original interior, the particular quality of the artworks created for the church. The church building has moreover an important situational value.
