The register's description

Description of component 1: (Straatweg 17; indicated on the accompanying map with no.1) MAIN BUILDING (Herteveld). Cubic main building built on a rectangular ground plan dating from c.1630, remodelled in 1804 when especially the appearance of the front façade changed through plastering and large windows and remodelled again in 1870-1880 when the house acquired its present form through raising of the side wings. The white-plastered building with ashlar plinth consists of two storeys under a hipped roof covered with Dutch tiles; on the ridge ends four moulded plastered chimneys. The house has a level difference (split-level): on the front side the principal storey above the cellars; on the rear side a ground floor with above it an entresol. The ceiling of the principal storey and of the entresol lie at the same level, above that the house has over its entire surface still a first floor and an attic. The seven-bay front façade has false joints in the plaster layer and a slightly projecting middle section of three bays. Central on the principal storey the framed glazed entrance door with rectangular fanlight reached via the ashlar doorstep; on the floor framed balcony doors with shutters that open onto a narrow balcony with on either side a pilaster between which ornamental ironwork. Central in the roof slope a roof dormer with four-paned window and on either side thereof a roof dormer with cross-shaped glazing bars. Until the Second World War the front house still had a richly decorated cornice, in which the roof dormers were incorporated. The remaining window axes are made up of an early 19th-century window with altered glazing bars and storm shutters on the ground floor and a T-window with shutters on the floor. All windows are crowned by a cornice. The 17th-century rear façade with a - running to the side façades - dentil moulding has a middle risalit of three bays crowned by a large three-sided pediment with in it a round window. In the roof slope two roof dormers. In the late 19th century the rear façade was entirely clad with wood (originally carefully jointed masonry), whereby the original proportions were preserved. Regular division with in the middle double garden doors and on either side multi-paned windows, two of which were replaced in the 19th century by double garden doors with shutters, on the ground floor and T-windows on the floor. Oak frames presumably date from the remodelling in 1804. The north and south façades have rectangular extensions under a flat roof with an irregular window division. The windows of the southern extension, in which the original scullery, are still 17th-century. In the INTERIOR is of importance among others: - the central hall with marble floor, a built-in clock mechanism (Frisian pendulum clock with mechanism from c.1830) and stucco and woodcarving in Louis XIV style; four busts in stucco with attributes of the four seasons; - a number of marble fireplaces in various styles, including a Louis XIV and an Empire; - three original oak stairs and a number of fine oak doors, partly with original hinges and fittings; - original kitchen with old water pump, ashlar sink and butcher's block.

Valuation MAIN BUILDING (Herteveld) of general importance: - on account of the age; - on account of the material used; - on account of the architectural design of the 17th-century house which was remodelled to its present appearance in the 19th century; - on account of the 17th and 18th-century elements in the interior; - on account of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
