Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
A completely detached building, built around 1904 as a town hall in neo-renaissance style. From the outset, a fire engine shed was housed on the ground floor with its entrance on the left side gable. On the rear gable was located a residential unit while on the front gable there was a holding cell with its own entrance next to the front stair. The town hall was entirely housed on the first floor. Possibly before the Second World War, a larger space was created as a fire engine garage, with an entrance on the front gable. Around 1950, substantial modifications were made to the lower storey for the installation of a bathhouse on the rear gable, the construction of an archive vault at the location of the holding cell, and the relocation of the holding cell to an extension on the rear gable. The residential unit was thereby eliminated. Later renovations largely reversed the modifications for the bathhouse.
Description
Building on an approximately square ground plan of two storeys and an attic storey high, constructed of red brick on a rendered plinth.
Generally, the facades consist of a lower storey executed as a full-storey height rendered plinth with block motif and rusticated corner blocks. The upper gable work is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with plasterwork facade bands at the height of the under-, middle and upper sills of the storey windows and rendered day-joint blocks. The facades are further decorated by ornamental wrought-iron wall anchors. The window openings are generally closed by an arched field in which a brick mosaic is applied, the whole accentuated by running moulded bricks with gutter. The large sash windows are provided with vertical glazing bars in the upper lights and some carved work in the frame wood. The side facades are finished with a simply profiled wooden box gutter cornice under which runs a frieze of brickwork mosaic.
The front or entrance facade possesses a strongly projecting stepped gable on the left side. In front of the recessed right side gable is a front stair with natural stone steps and openwork brick balustrade which leads to the renovated entrance on the first floor. The round-built main balusters on the stoep are crowned by small heraldic lions. On either side of the entrance are two substantial wooden sash windows under basket arch relieving arches. In the plinth is a double garage door in the gable projection and an arched access door, installed around 1950, under the stair landing. The gable is executed as a steep stepped gable with natural stone step slabs, rendered corner blocks and a diagonally placed top section with pointed crown. At the height of the first step slab, the gable is provided with a profiled drip moulding. In the top are three round-arched gable fields with in the higher central field goods hoists with fanlights and on either side a small window. The left (north) side gable is executed as a simple side gable, parallel to the adjacent road. In the plinth are three arched sash windows of which only the rightmost is original; on the storey three substantial sash windows as in the front gable. Above the central window the mosaic frieze is provided with white accents. The rear gable is laid out in essentials as the front gable. However, the gable projection is only slight so that the facade as a whole is flatter. Where the entrance section is located on the front gable, on the rear gable is a slightly projecting single-storey extension in which two small stained glass windows are installed. In the plinth are at the projection side three small, recent windows, from the period of the conversion to a bathhouse. Beside it a substantial, original window frame closed by a wooden constructed roller shutter with casing. Far left is a single-storey, flat-roofed extension in which since 1950 a holding cell has been housed. Over the depth of the extension the rear yard is partly walled, dating from the period of the residential unit in the lower storey.
The right side gable possesses in the plinth three barred windows: a small arched sash window near the front gable, a small rectangular semicircular frame and a substantial rectangular window frame from c. 1950. On the first floor are two sash windows as in the front gable, here however still provided with a half-glazing bar in the lower light. Above the windows the frieze is provided with white accents. In line with the front gable is a rendered partition wall placed for a urinal.
The building is provided with a truncated, slate-covered hipped roof with an adjoining gabled roof with slate between the stepped gables. Front and rear roof surfaces are provided with one large dormer, the right roof surface (south) with two large dormers. These dormers possess a curved, slate-covered hipped roof with pilaster crowning and decorative woodwork between the two-light window and the half-hipped end. The left roof surface possesses three smaller dormers with multi-faceted, slate-covered hipped roofs and pilaster crownings.
In the interior on the first floor the original layout is still largely present whereby only the central corridor has some value through original, characteristic finishes. Behind the entrance doors is a draught lobby with stained glass infills and the municipal coat of arms incorporated in the fanlight in stained glass. The hall itself is provided with tilework wainscoting with glazed edge strip and black and white marble floor tiles. For the rest, the rooms on the first floor have no particular values. In the largely renovated lower storey is at the front gable, adjacent to a service stair, still a simple vault room.
Valuation
Town hall of general importance on account of architectural-historical values as a rich and well-preserved regional style representative and of cultural-historical importance on account of its former function.
