Omschrijving

Description
HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT.
On the Military and Topographical map dating from 1850, a house is indicated, built rather far from the dyke, a garden layout is not indicated on it, nor is woodland. Only on the cadastral map which was surveyed in 1872, revised in 1902 and 1906, and partially revised until 1920, are the house, the orangery, the gardener's cottage and several other, now vanished outbuildings visible; also the loop-shaped drive from the Nieuw Loosdrechtsedijk, the walking path and the pond, groups of trees and possibly tree avenues are distinguishable. Characteristic of the layout in this period is the openness; this openness remains on the west side until 1946, and along the southern sight line until 1977, as shown by the Topographical maps of 1946, 1957, 1967 and 1977.
The characteristics of the landscape layout of Eikenrode are the "loop"-shaped drive to the house with as focal point five brown beeches placed together in it, just over a hundred years old, in an otherwise open space bordered by rhododendrons; on the top of the mound thrown up near the elongated pond grow oaks; furthermore the pond with accidented shores running in undulating lines, and the small round pond, as well as the sight lines from the house in four cardinal directions, respectively to the west over the more or less open space towards the Nieuw Loosdrechtsedijk and the drive, as well as to the northwest towards the orangery, to the south in the direction of the Zwarte Pad and to the east over the winding pond. The remains of the ice house previously present there, and the burial chapel located at the eastern boundary form important architectural additions, which further increase the cultural-historical value. In the park to the east of the house around the winding pond many special trees have been planted; including Mammoth tree (one specimen is approximately 130 years old), Japanese cedar, swamp cypress, Taxus baccata Fastigiata, Tulip tree and American oak, and also at the burial chapel and the orangery one finds a large variety of special conifer species, some of which date from the time of Hacke; the winding paths in this section are for the most part planted with old beeches on either side; at the far eastern side near the vegetable garden there is a row of oaks; conifers are located on the north side from the orangery to the site of the former cupola; on the south side of the lawn also conifers; near the house on the southwest side a group of eight linden trees; on the southeast side a brown beech, and on the northeast side a green beech; along the south side of the country estate both a path bordered by beeches leads to the dyke, and an oak avenue. As far as the structure and layout are concerned, the park has been preserved in broad outline. The sight lines from the house are preserved, although overgrown in some places, the drive is still largely recognisable, the winding paths and the old ponds are still present, and the tree stock, although some specimens have been felled and the woodland as a whole has been neglected, has great landscape value.
