Inleiding
Margry, Jos. Margry en J.M. Snickers.

Description
Introduction
Brick neo-Gothic cruciform basilica with side-placed front tower and chapels in the corners between choir and transept. Built between 1906 and 1908 to the design of architects A.A.J. Margry, Jos. Margry and J.M. Snickers.
From the choir the somewhat detached sacristy is accessible. The rich and homogeneous interior largely dates from the construction period. The murals by Pieter Geeraerdts date partly from the Second World War (triumphal arch painting); the work was continued after this war and falls entirely under protection. As a connection between church and presbytery a flat-roofed, single-storey building section has been added in which originally a meeting room and currently the day chapel are housed. The stained glass windows by Pieter Geeraerdts in the present day chapel date from the nineteen-sixties and as such fall outside protection. The organ, due to insufficient monumental value, likewise falls outside protection.
Description
The building is wholly erected in reddish-brown, machine-made brick in English bond with natural stone lists, blocks and cappings. With the exception of the gable tops the facades are divided by pilasters into bays, each bay provided with a window opening. The front elevation has a pointed arch-shaped main entrance section with two sets of double wooden doors in a heavy mortared surround of moulded brick. The spout gable-like top is crowned by a cast-iron Magdalene figure from 1896, originating from the entrance of the old church. The top of the entrance section is flanked by figurative tile tableaux, both representing angels, made in the tile factory of Thooft and Labouchère at Delft. In the gable top above the entrance section there is a substantial natural stone rose window beneath which a row of four small pointed arch windows is placed. To the left and right of the main gate are similar, but smaller secondary entrance sections, the right also intended as entrance to the meeting room c.q. day chapel, the left as entrance to the tower. The arch infills of the pointed arch-shaped entrances are provided with circular motifs. The side elevations are above the side aisles and above the chapels provided with circle windows. The gable tops of the transept are provided with substantial natural stone rose windows beneath which a row of four small pointed arch windows is placed. All stained glass work in the elevations is provided with simply painted glass. The choir is provided with five pointed arch windows with stained glass by atelier Nicolas & Zonen at Roermond, the representations of which concern the Eucharist. The long elevations are finished with wooden gutter mouldings on corbelled ornamental brickwork, the gable tops by a coping moulding on an accentuated edge of stepped brickwork. The nave and transept are provided with gabled roofs, the choir with a five-sided hipped roof. The roof planes are all covered with slates in Maas bond; the main roof planes are provided with small wooden roof dormers beneath gabled rooflets with woodcarving in the frames and mouldings. The octagonal crossing lantern has per side a pointed arch-shaped two-light window with stained glass and above it a pediment-like finish; the roof of the lantern is executed as an octagonal cupola roof, covered with slates and provided with a ball and cross finial.
The front tower built on to the left of the front elevation has a square ground plan and is per elevation provided with rows of three windows on the first two floor levels and a single window in the level above. The upper articulation is provided with rows of pointed arch-shaped louvered openings, flanked by small round corner turrets beneath pointed, clipped roofs covered with copper. The upper square articulation rests on a moulding of coupled arches and is likewise finished by a moulding of coupled arches on which a mortared balustrade and clocks in a four-sided plane are placed. The tower has a high, slate-covered octagonal spire with onion-shaped finial, cross and weathercock.
The single-storey sacristy built to the right behind the choir, which gives access to the choir, is provided with arched wooden stained glass windows and a flat roof. The connection between presbytery and church consists of a one-storey high brick intermediate section with two wooden three-light frames in arched gable openings. The intermediate section is accessible from the presbytery and likewise has its own entrance which gives access to a hall between the church and the present day chapel. The front elevation is finished with a mortared balustrade.
In the interior the brickwork in red facing brick predominates as accentuation of the plastered and later also painted wall surfaces. The nave is provided with a wooden barrel vault with a band of softly colored paintings in neo-Gothic style at the base. The origin of the barrel vault consists of a painted coffered ceiling on a corbel construction. Originally the crossing was provided with a completely painted open lantern which over time was closed off at the underside. Between the transverse arches and the rose windows a triforium of niches is present. The choir has rich stained glass windows and a plastered five-sided radial vault. Portions of the originally more colorful floor tiling have been replaced due to subsidence by different tiles. The refined neo-Gothic worked in Caen stone high altar, the pulpit, the choir screens or communion rails and the Mary altar were, as were the two wooden confessionals, made in the workshops of Margry and Snickers. The fixed oak pews of furniture maker Clement from Goes belong to the original furnishings. Near the entrance a baptismal chapel with baptismal font, enclosed by a wrought iron railing, has been added. Above the entrance at the east elevation a singing gallery has been added, resting on round, composite and riveted steel columns. From the old, early nineteenth-century Catholic church the holy statues, the Way of the Cross, the mission cross and the old high altar, now side altar in a chapel, were relocated.
The construction of the covered roof truss structure of the church consists of austere, mostly softwood, bolted rafters with knee struts for the fixing of the wooden vault ceiling.
Valuation
Church of general importance by virtue of cultural-historical and architectural-historical values of both interior and exterior and as an important and functional component of the complex.
