Description
OUDE KERKSTRAAT 5, OERLE
Introduction
R.C. CHURCH St. Johannes the Baptist. Three-aisled cross basilica, built in 1911 in a neo-Gothic style according to designs by architect W. van Aalst. The building is situated in the centre of the village church of Oerle.
Description
The church is executed in brickwork, provided with speckled courses in a contrasting colour brick and a tooth moulding. The central nave has a gabled roof; both side aisles are executed under half-hip roofs. The transepts and the choir are closed with three sides and have hipped roofs with ridge cresting. All roofs are covered with slate. The crossing is crowned by an octagonal tower with bell and spire.
The facades are articulated by buttresses between which pointed-arch windows filled with leaded glass are located.
At the front of the church is a square tower becoming narrower towards the top. The tower is constructed in four storeys and is crowned by an octagonal spire. Above the entrance, a double wooden door with wrought iron fittings, is a natural stone lintel and pointed-arch fanlight filled with leaded glass. Above this are pointed-arch-shaped blind recesses and louvres. Above these again is a clock face. Around the spire is an open-worked brick balustrade, on the corners interrupted by small turrets.
At the front, on either side of the tower, a pentagonal chapel has been built. The tent roof of these projections is crowned with a ridge cresting.
At the rear, on both sides of the choir, transversely placed extensions under gabled roofs are present. Around the stepped gables is a climbing stepped frieze, transitioning into pilasters, visible. In the roof plane are several small roof dormers.
The central nave is vaulted by brick star vaults; in the side aisles cross-rib vaults have been applied. The vaults rest on brick pillars on a plastered base with capitals, decorated with foliage. In the crossing the pillars are furnished with colonnettes. The passages from central nave to side aisles are provided with pointed arches in fair-faced masonry. The walls are plastered. Of the furnishings, neo-Gothic fragments of the high altar made by Goossens after a drawing by architect Heezemans, pulpit and communion rail are noteworthy, as well as an 18th-century copper baptismal font, nine neo-Gothic wooden holy figures, partly by H. van der Geld and a wooden standing Madonna.
The Stations of the Cross by F.J. Kops date from 1902-04.
In the choir are windows made by J. Menke in 1911 and 1920.
Mechanical tower clock, F. v.d. Kerkhof and Sons, 1912, electric winding.
