DORPSTRAAT 18, VELDHOVEN; H.CAECILIA
Inleiding
Mechanisch torenuurwerk, elektrische opwinding.
Waardering

Description
DORPSTRAAT 18, VELDHOVEN; ST. CECILIA
Introduction
Roman Catholic CHURCH, built in 1913 by architect W. te Riele. The three-aisle cross basilica is executed in a neo-gothic style. In 1956 the church was extended according to a design by C. Geenen in a style that matches the existing building. In this process, between the existing choir and the west front, the nave was lengthened, the original central structure thus became a cross church.
Description
Church executed in brick under gabled roofs and lean-to roofs, covered with slate. The centre of the front facade is dominated by a square tower with diagonal buttresses and three sections. In the first, tall section, on the ground floor, the entrance is located consisting of an arched double wooden door, under a gabled roof with a wind vane as a canopy. Above this is a pointed arch window with brick tracery, filled with stained glass. In the following sections there are successively blind niches with a lancet window and sounding holes.
The tower is crowned by a spire drawn in to eight sides with four small corner spires, covered with slate. Between these corner spires are triangular slate panels with a clock face. To the left of the tower is a low pentagonal Mary chapel placed under a sharp roof. In each facade panel is a narrow pointed arch window with stained glass. The transept arms are two bays deep and three-aisled. The choir is closed with five sides and is flanked by three-sided apses. Stained-glass windows have been installed in the choir.
The side facades are provided with pointed arch pilasters and a string course. In each bay is a pointed arch window with tracery, filled with stained glass. The church is vaulted with cross vaults and pointed arches.
The walls are plastered. In the centre section of the nave, at the location of the extension, the pillars are executed in concrete.
The church contains stained-glass windows with biblical representations. Some of these date from the third quarter of the nineteenth century, some date from 1921 and were made by W. Derix, Kevelaer - Goch. Nijmegen.
The inventory further includes, among other things, four oak reliefs executed in neo-gothic style from 1915, evangelist figures (XXa), stations of the cross, signed Frans Kops from circa 1920 and paintings, one by L. van Nederveen from 1844, another by Schimmelpenning from the first half of the 19th century.
Mechanical tower clock mechanism, electric winding.
Valuation
The building is of cultural-historical importance as an expression of a spiritual development. Because of the building style and the place which the building occupies in the oeuvre of the architect it also has architectural-historical values.
