Inleiding
Mechanisch torenuurwerk, B. Eijsbouts, Asten, 1926. No. 910. Trommelspeelwerk van B. Eijsbouts, Asten, 1926. No. 910.
Waardering

Description
Introduction
The neo-Gothic Roman Catholic CROSS BASILICA, St. Georgius, was built in 1901 to a design by architect W. te Riele Gzn.. In the west facade of the church the names are scratched of those who at that time helped finance the construction of the church. The interior of the church was restored in the nineteen-fifties during which the original murals were removed and the walls and pillars were given a white plaster coat. The stained-glass windows in the choir were made by the atelier F. Nicolaas and Sons. The large stained-glass window above the entrance (1928) is by Jos ten Horn. The original high altar and the Mary altar from the atelier of F.W. Mengelberg are still present in the church, as are the stations painted on linen by Bach (1906) and some polychromed figures by Gustaf Kalkar (nineteen-thirties). The copper altar doors, candelabra and plates (1934) come from the atelier Brom from Utrecht. The late Gothic sandstone baptismal font (now holy water basin) probably dates from the fifteenth century and comes from the Grote Kerk on the church square. The church stands in the centre of Almelo with the front facade (S) on the Boddenstraat. The adjacent parsonage (W) dates from 1864 and is of subordinate significance for preservation owing to its many alterations.
Description
Three-aisled cross basilica of eight bays with a five-sided closed choir and transept and a tower between five-sided chapels against the front facade (S).
The complex saddle-hipped roofs and lean-to roofs, the constricted octagonal spire of the tower and the narrow spire of the crossing turret are covered with slate in Maasland bond. The sacristy against the west facade has a gabled roof. The facades constructed in brown brick are articulated between the pointed-arch windows by buttresses which above the low side aisles alternately transform into flying arches. The windows have brick tracery and are all fitted with stained-glass windows. The four storeys of the tower are each closed off by an overhanging natural stone cornice band. The main entrance to the church is located on the ground floor in the front facade (S) of the tower. The two double heavy ironbound doors with large ornamental iron hinges are set within a sandstone frame. Above the entrance an image of Georgius between spandrels with tracery mortared in yellow brick under pointed arches. In the second storey pointed-arch windows, in the third storey spandrels with mortared brick tracery under double segmental arches and in the fourth storey pointed-arch windows. On the octagonal lantern below the spire on four sides clock faces. In the roof slopes of the church and the spire of the tower small dormers under hipped roof tiles. The church has internally white plastered walls and pointed arches under a plastered cross-rib vault. The windows in the clerestories are provided at the lower edge with a mortared pointed-arch frieze. Mechanical tower clock, B. Eijsbouts, Asten, 1926. No. 910. Drum musical mechanism by B. Eijsbouts, Asten, 1926. No. 910.
