RETAINING WALL AND BALUSTRADE WITH GARDEN URNS REAR COURTYARD belonging to the country estate Twickel. The rectangular terrace at the rear of the castle is enclosed on three sides by the castle complex and rests on the north and west sides on a late 17th-century retaining wall with a basement of sandstone blocks topped by a brick section; in the brick layer several sandstone drainage holes have been made. On the coping stone of the retaining wall stands the natural stone balustrade, which was manufactured following the example of the octagonal balustrade on the front courtyard. This was ordered in Glasgow in 1919. In total, six 19th-century cast-iron urns stand on the balustrade. During the excavations in 1978, the brick foundations of an octagonal fountain basin or flower bed were found (see floor plan of 1886).
