Inleiding

Introduction

Concrete viaduct built around 1914 according to a design by architect ir. Ch. H. J. Driessen in Functionalism. The concrete viaduct forms one of the engineering works over the railway line Heerlen-Schin op Geul in the south-eastern part of Limburg. The concrete viaduct is situated in the immediate vicinity of the station building of Schin op Geul.

Description

The concrete viaduct in Schin op Geul is of the type "arch bridge with elevated roadway". It possesses a span of approximately 38 metres in length and a roadway width of approximately 4.20 metres. This span has the form of a standing corbel arch with above it a concrete roadway. The concrete viaduct has only a central span. The central span is supported by two massive concrete foundations which are placed higher in the slope of the cutting.

Valuation

The concrete viaduct possesses cultural-historical values as a distinctive expression of a technical and typological development, and on the grounds of innovative value: a span with so-called standing corbel arch, which was applied in this viaduct concerns a technique which almost certainly never before or afterwards occurred in the Netherlands. Architectural-historical values are derived by the concrete viaduct from the particular importance of the object for the supra-regional history of architecture and building technique, as an example of the oeuvre of architect ir. Ch. H. J. Driessen and due to the use of concrete as building material. The railway bridge possesses ensemble values as an essential component of the railway line trajectory Valkenburg-Voerendaal-Heerlen in the rolling landscape of eastern South Limburg with diverse station buildings and engineering works and as a whole of distinctive cultural-historical and architectural-historical value. The concrete viaduct is furthermore of particular significance due to its location and thereby connected with the development of the region. The concrete viaduct is finally of importance due to the architectural integrity of the object and in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the surrounding landscape, and the architectural-historical, notably concrete-historical, building technical, typological and functional rarity.
