Inleiding
In een traditionele bouwstijl in 1941 naar een ontwerp van architect Joseph Cuypers gebouwde VREDESKAPEL, te midden van een viertal beelden voorstellende van links naar rechts Maria als troosteres van de bedroefden, koningin van de engelen, koningin van de maagden en hulp van de Christenen, ontworpen door kunstenaar Charles Eyck en uitgevoerd door beeldhouwer Giel Lahaye uit Meerssen. De kapel is gesitueerd in de onmiddellijke nabijheid van het klooster van de Congregatie van de Kleine Zusters van de Heilige Josef en tegenover de rijksbeschermde basiliek van Meerssen. Met de bouw van deze kapel werd een belofte ingelost dat indien tijdens de mobilisatie voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Meerssen geen slachtoffers zouden vallen, een kapel ter ere van Maria gebouwd zou worden.
Omschrijving
De Vredeskapel heeft een zeshoekige plattegrond, telt een bouwlaag en heeft een tentdak met shingles. De kapel is gebouwd in mergel en natuursteen. Bidkapel ter ere van de H. Maria. Plint en entree-omlijsting zijn uitgevoerd in een afwijkende soort natuursteen, evenals de sokkels van de vier beelden van Charles Eyck en Giel Lahaye aan weerszijden van de kapel. Spitsboogvormige entree, afgesloten door een smeedijzeren hek. Ronde glas-in-lood vensters beschermd door smeedijzeren hekken. Boven de entree zijn een palmtak en een staf afgebeeld met de tekst "Koningin des vredes". Aan de linker- en rechterzijgevel van de kapel uitbouwen in de vorm van een muur. Muurgedeelte rechterzijde met rondboogvormig poortje met smeedijzeren hek. Deze muurgedeelten eveneens in natuursteen. Onder de kapel een opslagruimte met toegang aan de achterzijde in de kloostertuin.
Waardering
De Vredeskapel ter ere van de H. Maria is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een geestelijke en een typologische ontwikkeling. De kapel bezit architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van het oeuvre van architect Joseph Cuypers, en kunstenaar Charles Eyck, en vanwege het bijzondere materiaalgebruik. Ensemblewaarde ontleent de kapel aan de situering aan de rand van het park van de voormalige proosdij in de onmiddellijke nabijheid van het klooster en de monumentale basiliek. De kapel is ten slotte van algemeen belang op grond van de architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur en de bovenregionale zeldzaamheid.

Introduction
A PEACE CHAPEL built in 1941 in traditional style to a design by architect Joseph Cuypers, in the midst of four statues representing from left to right Mary as consoler of the sorrowful, queen of the angels, queen of maidens and help of Christians, designed by artist Charles Eyck and executed by sculptor Giel Lahaye from Meerssen. The chapel is situated in the immediate vicinity of the convent of the Congregation of the Little Sisters of Holy Joseph and opposite the nationally protected basilica of Meerssen. With the construction of this chapel a promise was fulfilled that if during the mobilisation for the Second World War in Meerssen no casualties would occur, a chapel in honour of Mary would be built.
Description
The Peace Chapel has a hexagonal ground plan, comprises one storey and has a pitched roof with shingles. The chapel is built in marl and natural stone. Votive chapel in honour of St. Mary. Plinth and entrance surround are executed in a different type of natural stone, as are the plinths of the four statues by Charles Eyck and Giel Lahaye on either side of the chapel. Pointed-arch shaped entrance, closed by a wrought-iron gate. Round stained-glass windows protected by wrought-iron gates. Above the entrance a palm frond and a staff are depicted with the text "Queen of Peace". On the left and right side gables of the chapel extensions in the form of a wall. Wall section right side with round-arched small door with wrought-iron gate. These wall sections also in natural stone. Beneath the chapel a storage room with access at the rear in the cloister garden.

The Peace Chapel in honour of St. Mary is of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a spiritual and a typological development. The chapel possesses architectural-historical value as an example of the oeuvre of architect Joseph Cuypers, and artist Charles Eyck, and because of the particular material use. The chapel derives ensemble value from its situation at the edge of the park of the former provostry in the immediate vicinity of the convent and the monumental basilica. The chapel is finally of general importance on the grounds of the architectural integrity of the exterior and its supra-regional rarity.
