Inleiding
In een Neo-Gotische bouwstijl in 1869 in opdracht van de familie Regout gebouwde vrijstaande GRAFKAPEL met grafkelder, gesitueerd aan de rand van het kerkhof van de basiliek van Meerssen.
De urnenmuur van recentere datum in de grafkelder is uitgesloten van bescherming.
Omschrijving
De grafkapel heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond met driezijdige sluiting, telt een bouwlaag en wordt afgedekt met een zadeldak met driezijdige sluiting gedekt met een zinken roevendak. Kapel met houten rechthoekige dubbele deur met smeedijzeren beslag in een spitsboogvormige omlijsting. In geveldeel aan rechterzijde van de kapel eveneens een rechthoekige houten deur met smeedijzeren beslag. Twee spitsboogvormige glas in lood vensters met mergel tracering in de zijgevels. In de vensters in de linkerzijgevel is het familiewapen van de familie Regout nog aanwezig. De kapel is gebouwd in mergel.
De symmetrische voorgevel is door steunberen in drieën gedeeld. Het middendeel heeft een tuitgevel waarop een kruis van mergel heeft gestaan, het kruis is overigens bewaard gebleven. De toegang wordt gevormd door een spitsboogvormige poort met een geprofileerde omlijsting. In het vulstuk is de volgende tekst aangebracht:" Begraafplaats gesticht door Petrus Regout en zijne echtgenote Aldegonda Hoeberechts voor hen en hunne familie". Aan weerszijden van de deur bevinden zich spitsboogvormige vensters met ventilatieroosters. De gevel is gedecoreerd met een aantal spitsboognissen in verschillende uitvoering en geïnspireerd op verschillende stromingen binnen de gotiek. Aan de rechterzijde van de kapel bevindt zich een muur, opgetrokken in mergel met hierin een deur die toegang geeft tot de dakconstructie van de grafkelder. Deze is bekleed met asfalt en heeft een drietal ontluchtingskanalen.
Inwendig bevindt de grafkapel zich eveneens in een authentieke staat. Het overwelfde INTERIEUR van de kapel bevat onder meer een Neo-Classicistisch houten altaar met rondom een vijftal grafstenen. Het plafond is bekleed met pleister- en stucwerk. Een trap omgeven door een smeedijzeren hek voert naar de grafkelder. De smeedijzeren trapleuning heeft een houten handlijst. In het voorportaal van de grafkelder hangt een groot houten kruis en bevinden zich de graven van de stichter en zijn echtgenote. Aan de rechterzijde van het voorportaal bevindt zich de grafkelder die bestaat uit een gang met in totaal 109 grafnissen waarvan een aantal is afgesloten met een grafsteen. De gang heeft een plavuizen vloer. Aan het einde van de gang is een urnenmuur gebouwd, deze is van recentere datum.
Waardering
Deze grafkelder van Petrus Regout is cultuurhistorisch van groot belang. Het object is in hoge mate van belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, en tevens van een typologsche ontwikkeling. Het object bezit architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege het belang voor de geschiedenis van de architectuur, wegens de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteit van het ontwerp en het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek. De grafkapel bezit ensemblewaarde op grond van haar situering in de nabijheid van de monumentale en rijksbeschermde basiliek van Meerssen, en heeft als zodanig bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van de kern Meerssen. Grafkapel en kelder zijn van algemeen belang op grond van de architectonische gaafheid van het ex- en interieur, en vanwege de architectuurhistorische, typologische en functionele zeldzaamheid.

Description
The funerary chapel has a rectangular plan with three-sided termination, comprises one storey and is covered with a gabled roof with three-sided termination covered with zinc slates. Chapel with wooden rectangular double door with wrought-iron fittings in a pointed arch moulding. In the facade section on the right side of the chapel likewise a rectangular wooden door with wrought-iron fittings. Two pointed arch-shaped stained glass windows with marl tracery in the side facades. In the windows in the left side facade the family coat of arms of the Regout family is still present. The chapel is built in marl.
The symmetrical front facade is divided into three sections by buttresses. The middle section has a spout gavel on which a marl cross was mounted, the cross has however been preserved. The entrance is formed by a pointed arch-shaped doorway with a moulded moulding. In the fill the following text has been inscribed: "Burial ground founded by Petrus Regout and his wife Aldegonda Hoeberechts for themselves and their family". On either side of the door are pointed arch-shaped windows with ventilation grilles. The facade is decorated with a number of pointed arch recesses in various forms and inspired by different currents within the Gothic style. On the right side of the chapel is a wall, built in marl with a door giving access to the roof structure of the funerary vault. This is clad with asphalt and has three ventilation ducts.
Internally the funerary chapel is likewise in an authentic state. The vaulted INTERIOR of the chapel contains among other things a Neo-Classical wooden altar with around it five grave stones. The ceiling is clad with plaster and stuccowork. A staircase surrounded by a wrought-iron railing leads to the funerary vault. The wrought-iron stair rail has a wooden handrail. In the vestibule of the funerary vault hangs a large wooden cross and are located the graves of the founder and his wife. On the right side of the vestibule is the funerary vault which consists of a corridor with a total of 109 grave niches of which a number are sealed with a grave stone. The corridor has a tiled floor. At the end of the corridor an urn wall has been built, this is of more recent date.
