Inleiding
In een neobarokke bouwstijl in 1888 in opdracht van Amadeus Stevens op een heuvel aan de rand van het park van de voormalige proosdij gebouwde THEEKOEPEL genaamd "Gloriëtte" naar ontwerp van Lambert von Fisenne.
Omschrijving
De theekoepel met een achthoekige plattegrond en een achtzijdig gebogen dak is gedekt met zink. Een zinken piron met bloemversiering bekroont het dak. Houten rondboogvormige T-vensters en een houten rondboogvormige dubbele deur. De theekoepel is gebouwd in natuursteen en kunststeen, van pleisterwerk voorzien, en in hout.
De vier brede zijden van de achthoek zijn voorzien van een bordes met balustrade. De balusters zijn van natuursteen of kunststeen. Aan het oostelijke bordes is een gebogen trap. Het paviljoen is geheel gepleisterd en voorzien van neoclassicistische versiering.
De optrek is voorzien van zeer decoratief stucwerk. De pilasters zijn gedeeltelijk voorzien van cannelures, en met composiete kapitelen, halfronde timpanen, klassieke vensteromlijstingen met middenstukken met monogrammen (AS = Amadeus Stevens). In de vakken zijn schijnvoegen aangebracht.
Inwendig resteert het authentieke INTERIEUR nog grotendeels. Van dit interieur is onder meer van belang: plavuizenvloer met bloemmotief. Houten vensterbanken. Wanden met pleisterwerk. De bovenlichten versierd met stucwerk krullen. Langs de plafondrand decoratief houtsnijwerk met blad- en krulmotieven. In het midden van het plafond een ring in stucwerk.
Waardering
De theekoepel "Gloriëtte" is cultuurhistorisch van belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele, en een typologische ontwikkeling. Het object is van architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteit van het ontwerp en het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek. De theekoepel bezit ensemblewaarde op grond van zijn situering op een heuvel aan de rand van het park van de voormalige proosdij, en is evenals het gehele park van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van dit deel van de kern van Meerssen. Het object is ten slotte van algemeen belang op grond van de architectonische gaafheid van ex- en interieur en de zeldzaamheid.
