Inleiding

Introduction

An extensive PROCESSION PARK with ENTRANCE GATE, on the so-called Martyrs' Field near the Bonifatius Spring, was designed in 1925 by Wolter te Riele and laid out by the nursery of T.O. Bosgra from Burgum. The park with paths has, as it were, the shape of a butterfly. The layout can be attributed to the Decorative garden styles. For both the path layout and the design of the park with a large monument to St. Bonifatius and chapels with the Stations of the Cross, Wolter te Riele provided exemplary sketches, inspired by similar parks in Brielle, Boxmeer and Roermond. Furthermore, the foundations were laid for a pilgrimage chapel in the south-east corner of the site. The acquisition of an adjacent parcel of pasture land offered the opportunity to modify the plan to its current form, without substantially altering the path layout. The Stations of the Cross already provided for in the original design were not erected in the procession park until much later. The prayer chapels with ceramic representations of the Passion were made by Jacques Maris from Malden and placed in 1949. The procession park was restored in 1993 by Grondmij, whereby the planting, which consists mainly of beech, yew and flower and shrub borders, was restored and supplemented and the winding paths were newly surfaced with shells. The spring water basin with tap point, also renewed in 1993, designed by B.S. Adema Architects, is of secondary importance.

Description

The procession park is laid out on an almost rectangular plot with an indented west side that curves with the road around the so-called Bonifatius Spring; on the east side the old, straight field ditch is still present. The layout is almost symmetrical and consists of a central axis with a recently renewed basin, diverging winding paths from the entrance, perimeter paths and crossing paths. The deciduous tree planting consists of a beech avenue and other tall trees.

The entrance gate to the procession park was erected in 1934, at the same time as the construction of the chapel. It consists of four gate piers built in large-format yellow bricks and each is crowned with a sphere on which a cross band is applied in low relief. Rotating iron gates hang from the piers. On the inside of the central piers are iron flag-pole holders.

Valuation

The procession park from 1925 with entrance gate from 1934 is of general cultural-historical value:

- as a distinctive expression of a spiritual development, in particular of the Catholic revival in the twenties and thirties,

- as a distinctive expression of historical-religious continuity near the so-called Bonifatius Spring,

- due to the special significance of the complex due to the manner of design, in particular the application of the Decorative garden style,

- as an essential component of the entire complex,

- due to its guiding significance for urban development expansion south of Dokkum, in particular for the buildings along Bronlaan and the design of the Bonifaciusplein residential complex,

- due to the high quality of the buildings and the historical-spatial relationship of the chapel and the procession park with the so-called Bonifatius Spring.
