Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The simple double RESIDENTIAL HOUSES were designed in 1919 by architect W.K. de Wijs from Enschede for the Municipal 'Building Association', founded in 1906. The houses were built in 1921 in a brick architecture influenced by expressionism. The floor plans of the houses are identical to those of housing type A, but both housing blocks have their own architectural appearance which warrants a separate description as a subtype.
Description
The main structure of the ground plan is a rectangular building mass with a double extension of the (auxiliary) kitchens perpendicular to it at the rear. The housing blocks consist of one storey under a transversely positioned gabled roof with half-hipped ends, covered with smoked Dutch tiles; the roof slope at the front is interrupted by a brick dormer. In the roof truss structure are an attic storey and a storage attic. Each housing block is constructed in red pressed brick on a foundation course of clinkers with a levelling course, mostly sorted and alternating manganese-coloured clinkers and red pressed bricks. The front facade is finished with a band of manganese-coloured bricks. A brick dormer with a gable rises from the roof slope; the wall gables rest on simple brackets. The gable top of the dormer is enlivened with a manganese-coloured moulding and a levelling course on a projecting base. In the middle of this tympanum-shaped gable finish is a diamond-shaped ornament. The dormer contains two two-light windows. Zinc and half-round brick gutters in iron brackets are attached to the roof slopes. The front doors are at the corners of the building block, both under a stretcher course and with a terrazzo threshold. In the facade two two-light windows, each under a stretcher course. The side facades have among other things a wc window, a single-pane window and a square attic window. The rear facade is partially cut across by the contemporary auxiliary kitchen.
The double auxiliary kitchens are under a gently sloping gabled roof covered with smoked improved Dutch tiles. In the side facades of the extension a kitchen window and a rear entrance. In the rear facade of the main volume two two-light windows. On the roof slope at the rear are two wooden dormers with two-light windows and iron, four-pane roof lights.
Valuation
The houses from 1921 are of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical value: - as an example of housing typology, in particular as a subtype, developed by W.K. de Wijs, comparable to residential construction in the Pathmos neighbourhood in Enschede, - due to the reasonable degree of integrity of the exterior, - due to the reasonable degree of importance of the detailing, which on the one hand distinguishes the different housing types and on the other hand achieves a high degree of unity through consistent material use, - as an essential component of the total complex at Bonifaciusplein.
