Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The DWELLINGS were designed in 1919 by the architect W.K. de Wijs from Enschede for the Municipal 'Bouwvereniging', founded in 1906. The dwellings were built in 1921 in a brick architecture influenced by expressionism. On De Wijs's drawings they are designated as Housing Type A. The pure formal example of this main type are three small blocks of four dwellings. They form the semi-circular closure of the inner courtyard.
Description
The main structure of the ground plan is an elongated building body with, perpendicular to it at the front, a projecting central section of the intermediate dwellings and at the rear two extensions of the (ancillary) kitchens. The dwelling blocks are interconnected by a party wall with a saddle back and a round-arched gateway beneath a roll moulding, in which is a wooden, buttoned door. The dwelling blocks consist of one storey beneath a gabled roof laid with red improved Dutch tiles with an attic storey and storage loft. Each dwelling block is constructed in red strong-press bricks on a lime mortar base of clinker bricks with a roll moulding, mostly sorted and alternating manganese-coloured clinker bricks and red strong-press bricks. The front facade is symmetrically arranged with in the centre a projecting central section beneath a pointed gable. The gable moulding of the pointed gable rests on a cantilevered setting of the corner column and consists of a double roll moulding, of which the lower consists of a sorted layer that runs through to and including the second storey; from there the roll moulding runs horizontally across the facade to an imaginary trapezium. The gable top is further framed on three sides by a band course. At the corners of the central projection stands a corner column, which is constructed as a buttress. Below the overhang a front door with terrazzo threshold and side light, both beneath a continuous band course. In the facade walls four two-light cross windows beneath a band course with a strip of manganese-coloured clinker bricks. The side facade is closed at the top by a band course of red bricks and manganese-coloured clinker bricks between two bands of manganese-coloured clinker bricks. From the gabled roof hangs a semi-circular zinc gutter in iron brackets. On the roof slope of the corner dwellings stand two wooden roof lights with two-light cross windows. In the gable top of the central projection four cross windows and two narrow attic windows. The side facades have among other things a WC window and a square attic window, some with cross glazing bars. The rear facade of the intermediate dwellings is constructed over two storeys, in which four cross windows. On the rear roof slope iron four-pane roof lights and on the corner dwellings are two wooden dormer windows. The contemporary extensions, the double ancillary kitchens, have a gently sloping gabled roof, laid with red improved Dutch tiles. In the side facades a kitchen window and a rear entrance.
Valuation
The dwellings from 1921 are of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical value: - as an exemplary example of the housing typology developed by W.K. de Wijs, comparable with the housing construction in the Pathmos district of Enschede, - because of the reasonable degree of integrity of the exterior, - because of the reasonable degree of importance of the detailing, which on the one hand distinguishes the different housing types and on the other hand through the consistent use of materials creates a great degree of unity, - as the core of the total complex at Bonifaciusplein.
