Omschrijving

Description
HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT.
The current historic garden and park layout of the country estate Prattenburg dates back in origin to the seventeenth century. In the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century the house Prattenburg was rebuilt or reconstructed with separate living spaces for the farmer and the gentleman. On the earliest known depiction of the house and surroundings on a map from 1705 by Justus van Broeckhuijsen, a simple avenue layout can be recognised around the house. This layout could date from the time of the aforementioned (re)construction. Entirely to the south of the layout lay, still belonging to the country estate, the undulating and wooded area; the 'Prattenburgsche Bosch'. In the 18th and partly 19th century this simple layout was retained. On the topographic map from 1847 several avenues are shown which in the last quarter of the nineteenth century are incorporated into the park layout. During the reconstruction of the house in 1887, the garden and park layout of Prattenburg also underwent major changes. To the south of the house Prattenburg, around 1888, in the Prattenburgse Bos which until that time was divided into compartments, the now still existing woodland walk -place name Engelse Werk- with winding paths was laid out. In 1890 the family grave was built here. Around 1900 further changes took place within the layout, for which Otto Schultz provided the plans; within the older avenue system an estate structure was created, whereby the aim was to achieve an integration between architecture and layout. Directly to the south of the house the lawn with tree groups was laid out and from the house various still existing views were designed including one on the drive to the south, one via the newly laid out rose garden at the Cunerahoeve and one in a south-easterly direction on the park. Also the still existing sight line to the south-east of the house towards the Prattenburgsche Bosch was laid out in this period, as were two small winding ponds with surrounding walking paths in the east of the park which are shown on the topographic maps of 1906-7 and 1918. Around 1925 both water features were enlarged into one large, deeply situated winding pond which is surrounded by rhododendrons and of which Henri Copijn must have been the designer. Moreover Leonard Springer worked on the layout in this period; what exactly came from his hand to the east of the house is unclear. However, he embellished the layout around the house with flowering shrubs. During the reconstruction of the house in 1956 a round square with a drive was laid out to the west of the house for the new front facade, the southern drive was abandoned. Also the terrain around the house was raised by approximately one metre. In 1962 the route of the Cuneraweg was relocated to the south and since then cuts through the Engelse Werk, which was thereby reduced in size. In 1985 a tennis court was laid out to the north of the house and in the 1990s a new rose garden was established in place of the rosarium which over time had become a lawn.
