Inleiding

Introduction

Two WORKERS' DWELLINGS under one roof on a rectangular plan, 1920-1921. Component part of the social housing complex Schildersplein and surroundings, situated immediately behind the middle-class dwellings on the Franciscus Romanusweg. Built in the manner of the Amsterdam School according to a design by the Amsterdam architects Z. Gulden and J. Geldmaker, commissioned by the socialist Housing Association Beter Wonen in Maastricht. The dwellings were renovated in 1987. Extensions and outbuildings realised since 1921 are excluded from protection.

Description

Two workers' dwellings situated in the southwestern part of the housing complex Schildersplein, consisting of one storey plus attic storey and loft space on a rectangular plan.

The whole is covered by a broken hipped roof with red Dutch tiles renewed in 1987. The dormer windows on the roof slopes have either a renewed rectangular wooden window frame with vertical glazing bars, or two renewed rectangular wooden window frames separated by a partition. From these dormer windows the original cross-shaped glazing bars have been removed. Ridge chimney. The high-rising chimneys on the side roof slopes have been shortened or removed. The eave gutters on brackets are now clad with trespa; the original ridge ornaments have been removed.

Symmetrical front facade with centrally placed entrance area. This entrance area originally had the form of a portico with two rectangular wooden panel doors with fanlight, mutually separated by a partition wall for which a pair of columns on brick basement. These columns bore as it were the concrete lintel above the entire portico. Now the entrance area is completely placed in the building line, the panel doors have been replaced and the facade surface remaining between the doors is fitted with simple boarding.

On either side of the entrance area one renewed, vertically glazed rectangular wooden window, in place of the original rectangular wooden cross windows with vertically glazed upper windows.

The side facades of this double workers' dwelling originally had two coupled square wooden 4-pane windows.

The rear facades are mirror images of each other and were provided per building lot with a centrally placed rectangular wooden door with sidelight and small glazing bars in the glass panels. Adjacent to this a rectangular double wooden room door with sidelights. The glass panels of these too were fitted with small glazing bars.

The double workers' dwelling is built in red-toned brick, laid in running bond, on a vertically laid, varying in height plinth of tuffstone bricks. Window sills. Sandstone window lintels.

Valuation

The workers' dwellings of the housing complex Schildersplein and surroundings are of cultural-historical importance as a highly distinctive expression of a socio-economic and typological development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the architectural style, the involvement of the architects Gulden and Geldmaker, by the aesthetic quality of their design and the use of materials. The dwellings form an essential part of the housing complex Schildersplein and surroundings, and on account of their location are most intimately connected with the development of the city and are of special significance for the appearance of the district. The double workers' dwelling is architecturally reasonably intact and of great importance for the structural and visual integrity of the built environment. The double dwelling is furthermore of importance on account of the high degree of architectural-historical and typological rarity, all of this in a regional perspective and in relation to the relatively advanced age of the housing complex Schildersplein and surroundings.
