Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Five MIDDLE-CLASS DWELLINGS in a street frontage on an L-shaped plan, 1920-1921. Because of their location at the corner of Franciscus Romanusweg and Karel de Vogelstraat, these dwellings form a distinctive component of the social housing complex Schildersplein and surroundings. Built in the style of the Amsterdam School after a design by Amsterdam architects Z. Gulden and J. Geldmaker, commissioned by the socialist Housing Association Beter Wonen in Maastricht. The whole was renovated in 1987 and both corner properties (Franciscus Romanusweg 23, 24) were each divided into three residential units. As a result, the street frontage in question currently comprises nine residential units. The extensions and outbuildings realised since 1921 are excluded from protection.
Description
Street frontage situated in the south-west of the complex Schildersplein, comprising two storeys plus attic storey on an L-shaped plan. The two corner dwellings have mutually mirrored triangular plans, the other dwellings rectangular plans.
The whole is covered by a flattened hipped roof with red Dutch tiles renewed in 1987. Both single and double dormers on the roof slopes. The single dormers have a renewed rectangular wooden window frame with double vertical glazing bars, the double dormers twice two renewed rectangular wooden window frames with double vertical glazing bars, separated by an intermediate partition. From all these windows the original cross-shaped glazing bar pattern has been removed. The gutter boards are clad with trespa. Recent attic windows.
Rhythmically articulated front facades, with triangular and round double bay windows between which the entrance sections are placed.
The front facades of Franciscus Romanusweg 25 and 26 are mutually mirrored. Two triangular double bay windows with renewed, in the second storey vertically glazed rectangular wooden window frames, from which the original 8-pane glazing bar pattern per glass panel has been removed.
Between both bay windows the renewed front doors with fanlights have been placed. Slightly projecting, combined wooden side-light frame, without the original horizontal glazing bar pattern, supported by a decoratively laid-in-brick console. Above the entrance section, high under the gutter board a double, slightly projecting wooden window frame, from which the original 6-pane glazing bar pattern per glass panel has been removed.
The corner properties Franciscus Romanusweg 23 and 24 are likewise mutually mirrored. Each corner property has three window bays on either side of a shared entrance section. This entrance section consists of two juxtaposed rectangular wooden doors with fanlight, above which under the gutter board a double, slightly projecting wooden window frame. The entrance section is flanked in turn by two double round bay windows with vertically glazed window frames.
Between the round corner bay windows and the triangular bay windows of the third window bay there is one window bay with rectangular wooden windows. These windows are provided in the first storey with an asymmetrical vertical glazing pattern, in the second storey with a symmetrical, double vertical glazing pattern. All original windows and doors have been replaced, including the original small glazing bars.
The property Karel de Vogelstraat 23 has, with the exception of the double window and door side-light set high under the gutter board, the same front facade arrangement as Franciscus Romanusweg 26.
The side facades of this street frontage were originally blind or irregularly articulated with three square wooden 4-pane windows.
The rear facades are provided property by property with two window bays. In the first storey single or double wooden doors with side-lights, in the second storey rectangular wooden, two- or three-pane windows. These window and door frames were originally provided with small glazing bars.
The street frontage is constructed in red nuanced brick, laid in stretcher bond, on a vertically laid plinth of tuf bricks.
Window and door lintels. Sandstone window sills.
Valuation
The middle-class dwellings of the housing complex Schildersplein and surroundings are of cultural-historical importance as a very distinctive expression of a socio-economic or typological development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the building style, the involvement of architects Gulden and Geldmaker, by the aesthetic quality of their design and the use of materials. The street frontage is an essential component of the housing complex Schildersplein and surroundings, is because of its location greatly connected with the development of the city, and is of special significance for the appearance of the city and neighbourhood. The street frontage is in architectural terms reasonably intact and of great importance for the structural and visual integrity of the urban environment. The street frontage is moreover of importance because of the high degree of architectural-historical and typological rarity, all this in relation to the relatively great age of the housing complex Schildersplein and surroundings.
