Inleiding

Introduction

NINE WORKERS' DWELLINGS in a symmetrical street facade, 1935-1936, component of the social housing complex Boschpoort. Built in business expressionist style after a design by architect A.J.N. Boosten of Maastricht, commissioned by the Building Association St.Servatius.

Reinforced concrete structures by engineering firm Henri Huydts of Maastricht, built by contractor J. Laeven of Heerlen, under supervision of master builder H. Reck.

The dwellings were renovated in 1982 and provided with new rear facade extensions and/or new storage sheds. These extensions are excluded from protection.

Description

Western in the Boschpoort complex situated row of seven workers' dwellings (types N1,N,N,N,N,N,N,N,N2) in a symmetrical street facade. All dwelling types have L-shaped floor plans due to the kitchen extension of one storey under flat roof at the rear facade and are arranged in pairs mirrored. The street facade as a whole is oriented lengthwise to the Bosscherweg. All dwelling types have two storeys with partial basement and attic storeys.

Corner property no.1 of type N1 has an asymmetrical gabled roof in transverse direction, on the long roof side provided with a roof dormer and ridge-height chimney. Corner property no.9 of type N2 has the same roof construction, but lacks a chimney on the long roof side. The intermediate dwellings of type N are covered with gabled roofs in lengthwise direction and have shorter ridge chimneys. All roofs are fitted with concrete tiles and eaves gutters.

The dwellings have rendered masonry, dark-tinted brick facades in Flemish bond. Concrete window and door lintels. Lintels in the first storey. The overhangs of the corner properties are supported on concrete corbels.

Rectangular wooden doors with four-pane glass panel. High positioned beneath the eaves cornice rectangular wooden window frames with vertical glazing bars. On the ground floor identical frames of which the vertical glazing bars have been removed due to aluminium ventilation panels.

Copper underthresholds. Rectangular, somewhat protruding and vertically glazed door sidelights. Rectangular, unglazed wooden side facade windows.

Rectangular wooden windows with double vertical glazing bars in the rear facades. The rectangular, double wooden terrace doors with four-pane glazing bars and two-pane fanlight are hidden from view due to the new built-on kitchen spaces or replaced by a new terrace door without glazing bars.

Valuation

The block of nine workers' dwellings is of cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of a socio-economic and typological development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the building style, the involvement of architect Boosten and the aesthetic qualities of his design.

The block is connected to the development of the Boschpoort district by virtue of its location and is significant for the appearance of the district. The housing block possesses reasonable architectural integrity and is important in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the built environment. There is also a matter of reasonable regional rarity.

Furthermore, the block is important as a functional component of the social housing complex Boschpoort.
