Inleiding

Description
Introduction
SEVEN WORKERS' DWELLINGS in a symmetrical street facade, 1935-1935, component of the social housing complex Boschpoort. Built in functional expressionist style according to a design by architect A.J.N. Boosten in Maastricht, commissioned by the Building Association St.Servatius.
Reinforced concrete structures by engineering firm Henri Huydts in Maastricht, built by contractor J. Laeven in Heerlen, under supervision of master builder H. Reck.
The dwellings were renovated in 1982 and provided with a new rear facade extension and/or new storage. These extensions and annexes are excluded from protection.
Description
A series of seven workers' dwellings (types N2,N,N,N,O,N,N2) situated in the eastern part of the Boschpoort complex in a symmetrical street facade. The N and N2 types have L-shaped floor plans due to the kitchen extension of a storey with flat roof on the rear facade and are arranged in mirrored pairs. The O type has a rectangular floor plan. The street facade as a whole is oriented lengthwise in relation to the Voedingskanaal. House numbers 23 and 25 project slightly forward relative to the other dwellings. All dwelling types have two storeys with partial basement and attic storeys. The corner buildings of type N2 have asymmetrical gabled roofs in transverse direction, provided with dormer windows on the long roof sides. The intermediate dwellings of types N and O are covered with gabled roofs in lengthwise direction and have shorter roof ridge chimneys. All roofs are provided with concrete tiles and soffit gutters.
The dwellings have a tuff-stone frame, dark-tinted brick facades in Flemish bond. Concrete window and door lintels. String courses in the first storey. The overhangs of the corner buildings are supported on concrete brackets.
Rectangular wooden doors with four-pane glass panel. Tall rectangular wooden window frames set beneath the soffit with vertical glazing bars. On the ground floor identical frames of which the vertical glazing bars have been removed due to aluminium ventilation louvres. Copper sub-sills. Rectangular, slightly projecting and vertically glazed door sidelights. Rectangular, ungalzed wooden side facade windows.
Rectangular wooden windows with double vertical glazing bars in the rear facades. The rectangular, double wooden terrace doors with four-pane glazing bars and two-pane fanlight are concealed from view due to the newly built-on kitchen spaces or replaced by a new terrace door without glazing bars.
Valuation
The block of seven workers' dwellings is of cultural-historical importance as a distinctive expression of a social-economic and typological development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the building style, the involvement of architect Boosten and the aesthetic qualities of his design. The block is connected to the development of the Boschpoort district due to its location and is significant for the appearance of the district. The housing block possesses reasonable architectural integrity and is of importance in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the built environment. There is also a matter of reasonable regional rarity. Moreover, the block is of importance as a functional component of the social housing complex Boschpoort.
