Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
SIX WORKERS' DWELLINGS in an asymmetrical street frontage, 1935-1936, component of the social housing complex Boschpoort. Built in functionalist expressionist style to a design by architect A.J.N. Boosten of Maastricht, commissioned by the Building Association St.Servatius.
Reinforced concrete structures by engineering firm Henri Huydts of Maastricht, constructed by contractor J. Laeven of Heerlen, under supervision of master builder H. Reck.
The dwellings were renovated in 1982 and provided with a new rear elevation extension and/or new storage. These extensions and outbuildings are excluded from protection.
Description
Situated in the northeastern part of the Boschpoort complex, a row of six workers' dwellings (types O, N, N, N, N, O1) in an asymmetrical street frontage.
The N-types have L-shaped floor plans due to the kitchen extension of a storey with flat roof on the rear elevation and are mirror-arranged in pairs.
The O- and O1-types have rectangular floor plans. The street frontage as a whole runs lengthwise with respect to the Voedingskanaal. All dwelling types have two storeys with partial basement and attic storeys.
The corner building of type O2 has an asymmetrical gabled roof in transverse direction, provided on the long roof side with a roof dormer. The remaining dwellings of types N and O are covered with gabled roofs in lengthwise direction and have short ridge chimneys. All roofs are fitted with concrete tiles and gutter fascias. Moreover, the ridge line of buildings 7, 9 and 11 is raised in relation to the ridge line of buildings 1, 3 and 5.
The dwellings have tuffstone, dark-tinted brick facades in bond pattern. Concrete window and door lintels. Roller courses on the first storey. The overhangs of the corner buildings are supported on concrete corbels.
Rectangular wooden doors with four-pane glass panel. High-set rectangular wooden window frames with vertical frame division. On the ground floor identical frames from which the vertical division has been removed due to aluminium ventilation panels. Copper sub-sills. Rectangular, slightly projecting and vertically divided door side-lights. Rectangular, undivided wooden side elevation windows.
Rectangular wooden windows with double vertical division on the rear elevations. The rectangular, double wooden terrace doors with four-pane glazing bars and two-pane fanlight are hidden from view due to the new attached kitchen spaces or replaced by new terrace doors without small glazing bars.
Valuation
The block of six workers' dwellings is of cultural-historical importance as a distinctive expression of a social-economic and typological development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the building style, the involvement of architect Boosten and the aesthetic qualities of his design.
The block is connected to the development of the Boschpoort neighbourhood due to its location and is significant for the character of the neighbourhood. The housing block possesses reasonable architectural integrity and is important in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the built environment. There is also a reasonable regional rarity.
Moreover, the block is important as a functional component of the social housing complex Boschpoort.
