Inleiding

Introduction

Former BISCUIT KILN HALL together with PLATE FACTORY, circa 1880. Built in a traditional craft style, commissioned by C.V. Société pour la fabrication des faiences en produits céramiques de toute espèce, in short the Société Céramique. Due to the restructuring of the Céramique site initiated in 1993, the biscuit kiln hall together with the Wiebengahal constitutes the last tangible relic of the former industrial purpose of the site.

The biscuit kiln hall was rebuilt and converted into a plate factory in 1951, whereby the number of roof lights was expanded.

Description

Factory for firing biscuit earthenware, later for firing glaze and making plates.

One storey on rectangular plan, situated in transverse direction with respect to the Maaspuntweg.

The factory building is constructed entirely in brick and is covered by a roof truss structure of steel Polonceau spans resting on buttresses visible in the outer facades, which are placed at alternating distances. The roof is completed by a wooden cladding structure. The central section of the roof truss structure is raised, which gives the hall high light penetration. This roof truss structure lies recessed between the end gables.

The end gable on the west side has two very characteristic steel round-arched windows with small glazing bars and concentric fanlight arrangement, as well as a round steel gable window with an arrangement centred on the midpoint. A small date stone commemorates the 1951 conversion.

Valuation

The biscuit kiln hall together with plate factory is of cultural historical value as a particular expression of a socio-economic, technical and typological development. The building is of importance in architectural history for the history of industrial building technique, due to its functional design, aesthetic quality, use of material and the special relationship between exterior and interior due to the roof truss structure.

The factory is connected, due to its location on the former Céramique site, with the development of Maastricht in the second half of the nineteenth century and remains of special significance for the appearance of the city after the restructuring of the old factory site.

The integrity of the factory has been preserved to a limited extent. The building, together with the Wiebengahal, is the only remnant of the Céramique business complex and has, also due to its relatively great age, considerable building technical, typological and functional rarity value.
