Inleiding
HOTEL, 1931, in met elementen van het Nieuwe Bouwen beïnvloede stijl, naar een ontwerp van de architecten Jos Joosten en F.A.W. van der Togt, in opdracht van de N.V. Heineken's Bierbrouwerij. Het hotel is gesitueerd in de gesloten wand van het Vrijthof en vormt een geheel met het pand Helmstraat nr.14.
Omschrijving
Het hotel heeft een L-vormige plattegrond, telt vier bouwlagen en wordt afgedekt met zadeldaken met grijze Oud-Hollands vernieuwde pannen. Dak met overstek.
Geveldeel Vrijthofzijde: het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is travertin.
Rechthoekige houten T- vensters, deels met bovenlichten, rechthoekige houten balkondeuren.
Pand met lijstgevel aan de rechterzijde axiaal gedomineerd door een driezijdige erkeruitbouw over de tweede en derde bouwlaag. Op deze erker een loggia met stenen balustrade.
In de eerste bouwlaag drie grote glaspuien en een rechthoekig ingangsportaal, hierboven een langgerekt bovenlicht. In de tweede bouwlaag een breed balkon met vlakke stenen borstwering. Op deze borstwering de naamaanduiding "Hotel du Casque" tussen een tweetal gevelstenen met familiewapens. Vensters vierde bouwlaag met doorlopende dorpelstenen.
Geveldeel Helmstraatzijde: het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is travertin en graniet. Rechthoekige houten vensters deels met bovenlichten, rechthoekige houten garagepoort.
Pand in vijf bouwlagen met asymmetrische gevelindeling. Zadeldak met rechte bakgoot met daarboven drie rechthoekige dakkapellen. Eerste bouwlaag bekleedt met rood graniet met aan de linkerzijde een inpandig portaal met hotelingang, en aan de rechterzijde de toegang tot de garage. De optrek is bekleedt met travertin en wordt aan de linkerzijde gedomineerd door een driezijdige erker over drie bouwlagen. Op deze erker in de vierde bouwlaag een loggia. Deze loggia loopt door over de gehele gevelbreedte. Overige frontgevel met vier vensterassen, en sterke verticale accenten in de vorm van licht vooruitspringende gevelranden.
Van het INTERIEUR van het pand aan de Vrijthofzijde is uitsluitend van belang: een gedeelte van het voormalige cafégedeelte met o.a. houten lambrizering, wanden met houten pilasters, balkenplafond.
Overig hotelinterieur in beperkte mate intact, overigens niet beschermenswaardig.
Waardering
Het Hotel du Casque bezit architectuurhistorische waarden wegens het bijzondere belang voor de bovenregionale geschiedenis van de architectuur, als voorbeeld van het oeuvre van architect Joosten en het bijzondere materiaalgebruik. Het pand bezit ensemblewaarde wegens de situering aan het Vrijthof en binnen het beschermd stadsgezicht Maastricht en daarmee van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van de stad. Het hotel is van algemeen belang wegens de architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur en de redelijke mate van architectuurhistorische zeldzaamheid.

Description
The hotel has an L-shaped plan, comprises four storeys and is covered with gabled roofs with grey renewed Old Dutch tiles. Roof with overhang.
Facade section on the Vrijthof side: the building material used is travertine.

Of the INTERIOR of the building on the Vrijthof side only the following is of importance: part of the former cafe area with among other things wooden wainscoting, walls with wooden pilasters, beam ceiling.
