The register's description

Inleiding

HERENHUIS in eclectische stijl, 1905, gebouwd naar een ontwerp van architect S. Rémont uit Luik (België) in opdracht van A. Pijls. Het pand is gesitueerd in de gesloten wand van het Vrijthof. Aan de achterzijde van het pand, aan de Papenstraat, bevindt zich het vml. poortgebouw met koetshuis behorend bij het herenhuis. In de periode 1940-1994, toen het pand achtereenvolgens in gebruik was bij de Duitse bezetter en na de oorlog als Kantongerecht, hebben enkele wijzigingen in het interieur plaatsgevonden.

Omschrijving

Het voormalige herenhuis telt een souterrainverdieping en twee bouwlagen en wordt afgedekt met een mansardedak met leien.

Een grote en twee kleine dakkapellen. Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is baksteen, hardsteen en zandsteen.

Asymmetrische gevelindeling in drie assen. Hardstenen plint.

Keldervensters met smeedijzeren roosters. In de eerste bouwlaag de entree met een rechthoekige houten paneeldeur met bovenlicht. Venster in rechterdeel frontgevel eerste bouwlaag met een verticale tracering in hardsteen. Hierboven in de tweede bouwlaag een erker met hoekzuilen met Korinthische kapitelen. Overige vensters tweede bouwlaag met kleine balustrade en fronton. Geveldeel met erker uitlopend in een lucarne met frontonbekroning en voluten. Smeedijzeren nokbekroning.

Gevels met geblokte banden van hardsteen in kettingverband met zandstenen vullingen.

In het INTERIEUR zijn onder meer van belang de entree met wit marmeren vloer en trap met acht treden naar vestibule en centrale hal; de vestibule met wit marmeren vloer; pilasters en kolommen in neo-classicistische trant; in de eerste bouwlaag enkele kamers met hoge houten paneeldeuren en plafonds met decoratief stucwerk; in de eerste bouwlaag tevens de zittingszaal van het kantongerecht met een cassetteplafond en houten lambrizering. Deze zaal werd na de tweede wereldoorlog uitgebreid met de voormalige zomersalon. Authentieke houten trap met decoratieve smeedijzeren leuning met houten armlegger. Op de overloop van de trap in een nis-achtige ruimte een fontein bekleed met geglazuurde tegels. In deze ruimte tevens een groot glas-in-lood raam van Atelier Kerling uit Den Haag, vervaardigd omstreeks 1925.

Aan de achtergevel, links in de eerste bouwlaag een uitbouw van een bouwlaag, met plat dak en glazen koepels. Het betreft de voormalige zomersalon.

Poortgebouw met koetshuis aan Papenstraatzijde telt twee bouwlagen met zadeldak met leien, aan binnenplaatszijde diverse dakkapellen.

Straatzijde met hardstenen plint en bakstenen optrek; rechthoekige houten vensters met in de eerste bouwlaag ijzeren tralies; rechthoekige houten toegangspoort met ijzeren latei; vensters met hardstenen dorpelstenen.

Aan de binnenplaatszijde een glazen luifel op stalen consoles; linkergeveldeel uitlopend in topgevel.

Waardering

Het voormalig herenhuis met poortgebouw bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling. Het pand bezit architectuurhistorische waarde wegens het belang voor de bovenregionale geschiedenis van de architectuur, de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, de bijzondere ornamentiek en samenhang tussen exterieur en delen van het interieur. Het pand bezit ensemblewaarde wegens de situering aan het Vrijthof: een plein dat architectuurhistorisch en stedebouwkundig van nationaal belang is, het plein is tevens van groot belang voor het aanzien van de stad. Het pand vormt tevens een onderdeel van het beschermd stadsgezicht Maastricht.

Het is van algemeen belang wegens de architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur en een deel van het interieur en de architectuurhistorische zeldzaamheid.

Introduction

GENTLEMAN'S HOUSE in eclectic style, 1905, built to a design by architect S. Rémont from Liège (Belgium) on commission from A. Pijls. The building is situated in the closed frontage of the Vrijthof. On the rear side of the building, on the Papenstraat, is located the former gate building with coach house belonging to the gentleman's house. In the period 1940-1994, when the building was successively in use by the German occupier and after the war as a District Court, some alterations to the interior took place.

Description

The former gentleman's house has a basement storey and two storeys and is covered with a mansard roof with slates.

One large and two small roof dormers. The building materials used are brick, hard stone and sandstone.

Cellar windows with wrought iron grilles. In the first storey the entrance with a rectangular wooden panelled door with fanlight. Window in right section of front facade first storey with vertical tracery in hard stone. Above this in the second storey a bay window with corner columns with Corinthian capitals. Remaining windows second storey with small balustrade and pediment. Gable section with bay window terminating in a dormer with pediment crowning and volutes. Wrought iron ridge cresting.

Facades with blocked bands of hard stone in stretcher bond with sandstone infills.

In the INTERIOR the following are of importance inter alia: the entrance with white marble floor and stair with eight steps to vestibule and central hall; the vestibule with white marble floor; pilasters and columns in neo-classical style; in the first storey several rooms with high wooden panelled doors and ceilings with decorative stucco work; in the first storey also the courtroom of the district court with a coffered ceiling and wooden wainscoting. This room was expanded after the Second World War with the former summer salon. Authentic wooden stair with decorative wrought iron railing with wooden handrail. On the stair landing in a niche-like space a fountain clad with glazed tiles. In this space also a large stained glass window by Atelier Kerling from The Hague, made circa 1925.

On the rear facade, left in the first storey an extension of one storey, with flat roof and glass domes. This is the former summer salon.

Gate building with coach house on the Papenstraat side consists of two storeys with gabled roof with slates, on the courtyard side various roof dormers.

Street side with hard stone plinth and brick elevation; rectangular wooden windows with in the first storey iron grilles; rectangular wooden entrance gate with iron lintel; windows with hard stone sill stones.

On the courtyard side a glazed canopy on steel consoles; left gable section terminating in a step gable.

Valuation

The former gentleman's house with gate building possesses cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a socio-economic development. The building possesses architectural-historical value due to its significance for the supra-regional history of architecture, the aesthetic qualities of the design, the particular ornamentation and coherence between exterior and parts of the interior. The building possesses ensemble value due to its situation on the Vrijthof: a square that is of national importance in architectural-historical and urban planning terms, the square is also of great importance for the appearance of the city. The building furthermore forms part of the protected townscape of Maastricht.
